SICK DOS-1204-G M12 4-Pin Female Field-Wireable Connector

Description

Field-wireable M12 female connector for sensor cables

The SICK DOS-1204-G (part no. 6007302) is a field-wireable female M12 connector, straight, 4-pin and A-coded, with screw-type terminals. It lets an electrician terminate a sensor cable on site rather than buying a pre-moulded cable, which helps where cable length is unknown or where a damaged lead has to be replaced during maintenance.

It is a typical mate for the M12 4-pin male connectors found on SICK sensors in this order list such as the W12, W250 and V18 families.

Wiring and installation points

The connector accepts round cable of 4 mm to 6 mm outer diameter and conductors up to 0.75 mm², with screw terminals. Strip the cable, thread the gland parts, tighten each terminal and close the housing with the stated tightening torque of 0.6 Nm so the IP67 rating is achieved. A loose gland or a damaged O-ring is the usual cause of moisture ingress in field-wired connectors.

Because the connector is unshielded, it suits standard sensor cables in typical industrial environments. Where an EMC-critical signal such as encoder or fieldbus wiring is involved, a shielded connector type is the safer choice; ask for advice before ordering.

For maintenance teams the connector is a convenient spare: it allows a cut or crushed sensor lead to be re-terminated on site without waiting for a new cordset, as long as cable diameter and conductor size stay within the stated limits.

Pin allocation and compatibility

Pin allocation on the sensor side follows the connection diagram in each sensor data sheet. For a typical SICK PNP sensor with M12 4-pin connector, supply is on two pins and the output and control wires on the other two; always check the diagram of the exact sensor type before wiring. The DOS-1204-G data sheet shows only the connector properties, so mating-sensor compatibility must be confirmed by the buyer.

Selection checks before ordering

A field-wireable connector only works well when the cable and the application match its limits. Before ordering the DOS-1204-G, measure the outer diameter of the actual sensor cable rather than relying on a catalogue description, and confirm that each conductor fits the stated cross-section. Count the conductors needed: the connector is 4-pin, so a sensor that uses a fifth pin for configuration or a second output needs a different connector type. Check that the mating device has an A-coded M12 male socket, since other M12 codings will not engage. Finally, compare the supply voltage and the load current of the circuit with the voltage and current values in the specification table.

Step-by-step termination on site

Work with the circuit isolated. Slide the locking nut, clamping parts and seal onto the cable in the order shown in the SICK assembly drawing before stripping, because they cannot be fitted afterwards. Strip the outer sheath carefully without nicking the conductor insulation, then strip each conductor only as far as the terminal needs. Fit ferrules if your site standard requires them for fine-stranded wire. Connect each conductor to the pin that matches the wiring diagram of the sensor, tighten the screw terminals firmly, and give each wire a light pull to confirm it is held. Assemble the housing, tighten the cable gland so the seal grips the sheath, and record the pin colours used on the loop drawing.

Testing and maintenance

Before connecting the field-wired connector to the sensor, check continuity from each pin to the far end of the cable and confirm there is no short between adjacent pins or to earth. After connecting, verify that the sensor powers up and that its output reaches the correct PLC input. During routine maintenance, look for cracked housings, loose locking nuts and cables pulled tight against the connector, as strain at the cable entry is a common cause of intermittent faults. Keeping a few spare connectors with the electrical maintenance kit lets a damaged lead be repaired during a short stop.

Installations in Oman

Sensors on conveyors, packaging lines and outdoor equipment in Oman face dust, washdown water, high temperature and strong sunlight. The IP67 rating only applies when the connector is fully assembled, the seal is undamaged and the locking nut is tightened to the specified torque onto the mating socket. Route cables so they are not exposed to constant direct sun where possible, leave a drip loop so water runs away from the connector, and keep sand away from the thread when making or breaking the connection. A light inspection of the seal each time the connector is opened helps keep the enclosure rating intact over the life of the installation.

Documents and quotation

This page links the original SICK data sheet for DOS-1204-G (part no. 6007302). Values in the specification table were copied from that document. Seven Star LLC supplies SICK products as an independent supplier in Muscat; send your request with the exact type and part number, the quantity and the delivery point, and mention any need for matching sensor cable or cordsets. Please verify the details with us before placing an order, since the manufacturer may change data without notice. See also automation accessories and the SICK WTB4-3 miniature photoelectric sensor.

Before ordering, compare the type code and part number on your existing unit or drawing with the details on this page, and confirm supply voltage, output type, connector and mounting against the data sheet. Send the nameplate details with your enquiry and we will check them against the manufacturer data before quoting.

About brand

Machine builders have relied on SICK since 1946 for the sensors that tell a controller where a part, a pallet or a person is. The company, based in Waldkirch, Germany, makes photoelectric, inductive and magnetic sensors, distance sensors and safety devices. Seven Star LLC supplies SICK sensors to maintenance teams and integrators in Oman, mostly as exact replacements identified by type code and part number.

SICK sensor families on this page

Five of the SICK families listed here are described below. The W4 miniature photoelectric sensors include the WTB4-3, a proximity sensor with background suppression. IME is the standard inductive proximity line, and the IME18 is the M18 housing size. RZT7 cylinder sensors fit T-slot pneumatic cylinders and detect the piston magnet. The DT35 belongs to the Dx35 laser distance sensors for mid-range measurement. The microScan3 is a safety laser scanner that guards hazardous zones around machines and vehicles.

Where SICK sensors are used

SICK sensors are fitted on packaging and bottling lines, conveyors, palletizers, warehouse cranes and automated guided vehicles. Safety laser scanners protect robot cells and transfer cars. In process plants, the same proximity and cylinder sensors report valve and damper positions on packaged equipment.

Ordering SICK sensors: what we need

A SICK type code such as IME18-08NPSZW2K packs the whole specification into one string: housing size, sensing range, flush or non-flush mounting, output type and connection. Each variant also has a 7-digit part number, and that number is the safest identifier. Please send:

  • Type code and part number from the sensor label, or a photo of it
  • Output type (PNP or NPN, normally open or closed) and connection (cable length or M8/M12 plug)
  • For microScan3: variant (Core or Pro), interface, protective field range, plus system plug and bracket

We check the code in SICK's documentation and tell you if the manufacturer lists a successor.
