Pixsys ATR171 PID Controller 72×72 mm, 4 Setpoints, Timer

ATR171 is the 72×72 mm member of the Pixsys controller family, a configurable PID controller with a 4-digit green process display, a 4-digit red display, up to four setpoints and a multi-voltage 24 to 230 V AC/DC supply. Four ordering codes cover single-input versions with one to three relays and a dual-input version with analogue output and RS485.

A larger front for programmer, timer and remote-setpoint work

Beyond ordinary PID control the ATR171 carries a small process programmer. The pre-programmed cycle, selected with the operating-mode parameter, ramps to setpoint 1 on a set gradient, goes to setpoint 2 at maximum power, holds for a set time, and then cools to ambient on a second gradient before showing stop. A start/stop digital input can trigger the cycle, and the datasheet describes it as a 3-step cycle. A decremental timer function and a soft-start by gradient in degrees per hour complete the set.

The -23ABC-T version adds a second analogue input. In dual-input mode the process used for control can be AI1, AI2, the mean of both, the difference AI1 minus AI2 or the absolute difference, which suits averaging two thermocouples in a large oven or watching a delta between two points. A remote setpoint mode lets one of the two inputs (4-20 mA or 0-10 V) become the setpoint of the other loop. The manual states that RS485, the pre-programmed cycle and soft-start are disabled while the second input is enabled by the dip switches.

Choosing the code

Use -11ABC or -12ABC for a thermostat with one or two relays, -14ABC when three relays are needed (the fourth is a 5 A relay at up to 30 V), and -23ABC-T for two probes, retransmission to a recorder or a Modbus link. Only the -11, -12 and -14 codes carry the digital input functions such as pre-programmed cycle start, hold, run enable and tuning start. The -23ABC-T instead provides the second analogue input and the PNP, volt or mA output.

Notes from the manual

The manual makes the pre-programmed cycle available on -23ABC-T only when the dip switches select serial communication, which turns the second input off. Automatic tuning does not run during a pre-programmed cycle, but manual tuning can be started at any time. When soft-start is used the automatic tuning starts after the soft-start time ends.

For Modbus the slave address and delay are set on parameters 84 and 85. Words may be read in blocks of 20 with functions 0x03/0x04, and written with 0x06 or 0x10; changing words not listed in the manual can cause malfunction.

Applications

The 72×72 size and the programmer suit ovens, kilns, autoclaves and laboratory chambers that follow a simple ramp-soak-cool profile. The timer function adds a counted hold, while the dual-input mean helps with large furnaces where one thermocouple cannot describe the whole chamber.
