EUCHNER ZSM2100 Three-Position Enabling Switch

Description

Handheld enabling device for setup and teach-in work

The EUCHNER ZSM2100 (order no. 106103) is a handheld three-stage enabling switch. It lets an operator run a machine or robot in setup mode with the guards open, because motion is only permitted while the enabling button is held in its middle position. Releasing the button or pressing it fully in a reflex reaction (the panic position) removes the enable signal and stops the hazardous movement.

This version adds operating elements that are useful for jog and teach tasks: a yellow LED for visual feedback, a + and a – pushbutton that can be assigned individually, for example to move an axis in the positive or negative direction, and a five-position selector switch for choosing the axis, speed or range. The switch is supplied with a straight 3 m connecting cable.

How the three stages work

Stage 1 is the released position: the enabling contacts are open. Stage 2 is the actuating point in the middle of the travel: the contacts close and the control system may allow reduced-speed motion. Stage 3 is reached when the button is pressed through: the contacts open again. In general, an operator in a sudden hazard may either let go or grip harder, which is why both extremes remove the enable signal. The exact switching sequence depends on the wiring, so follow the function sequence in the data sheet.

Integration notes

The enabling contacts must be evaluated by a suitable safety relay or safety controller with two channels. The B10D value of 100,000 cycles is the basis for the PL calculation and should be entered with the expected number of operations per year. Because the cable ends in flying leads, the switch is usually terminated in a junction box or connected via a plug chosen by the machine builder; EUCHNER also offers ZSM versions with coiled cables and RC plug connectors. IP54 means the handheld unit is intended for dry indoor setup work rather than wash-down areas.

Documents and quotation

The attached EUCHNER operating instructions describe the ZSM enabling switch range, wiring and safety data. For a quotation, give the order number 106103, the quantity and the controller or safety relay it will connect to. See Safety Switches & Guard Locking for other EUCHNER safety devices.

Why Enabling Switches Like the ZSM2100 Are Used

During setup, programming and troubleshooting, operators sometimes need to be inside or close to a machine while it moves. Normal guarding cannot protect them in this mode, so standards for machinery and industrial robots require additional measures such as reduced speed and a hold-to-run enabling device. The enabling switch is the operator’s way of giving active, continuous consent to motion. If the operator lets go or squeezes in a reflex reaction, the motion stops.

The ZSM2100 combines this enabling function with extra operating controls in one handheld unit, which lets the operator jog axes and select modes without reaching for a separate control panel while staying in the best position to watch the machine.

ZSM2100 Wiring and Validation Tips

  • Wire both enabling channels to a suitable safety evaluation unit, as shown in the EUCHNER wiring examples.
  • Combine the enabling signal with other safety measures required by the risk assessment, such as safely limited speed and mode selection.
  • Treat the + and – buttons and the selector switch as operational commands rather than safety functions.
  • Test the three positions of the enabling switch during commissioning and at regular intervals.
  • Protect the cable from crushing and sharp edges, and provide a holder where the switch can be placed when not in use.

Care and Inspection

Inspect the housing, button and cable regularly for damage. A damaged enabling switch should be taken out of service and replaced, because its correct function is essential for operator safety during setup. Keep the device clean and avoid solvents that could attack the housing materials.

Typical Applications in Oman & the GCC

Handheld enabling switches are used on robot cells, machine tools, packaging and palletising lines, and special-purpose machines during setup and teach-in. Machine builders and maintenance teams in manufacturing, food and beverage and logistics facilities use them where operators must work near moving equipment at reduced speed.

Why Source the EUCHNER ZSM2100 enabling switch from Seven Star LLC

Seven Star LLC supplies EUCHNER equipment and spare parts to industrial, laboratory and project customers across Oman and the GCC. Our team works from the complete ordering code rather than a short description, because many manufacturers sell several closely related variants under similar names. When you request a quote, we compare the requested code with the manufacturer’s published data and, for a replacement, with the label of the installed unit, so that differences in version, accessories or scope of supply are raised before the order is placed.

Our team can help confirm the correct ordering code, list the accessories and consumables that are ordered separately, and collect the documentation your project or maintenance department needs for its records. To start, request a quote with the model, quantity, application and any site or project specification that applies.

About brand

EUCHNER is a German manufacturer of safety switches, guard locking systems and safety controls for machine safety, founded in 1940 and headquartered in Leinfelden-Echterdingen near Stuttgart. The family-owned company is best known for its guard locking and transponder-coded safety switches.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list EUCHNER safety components for machine builders and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC.

EUCHNER product series

Guard locking switches include the transponder-coded CTP, CTA and CTS series, the CTM with BiState guard locking, the STP twin switch and the electromechanical TX1B and TZ series. The MGB2 Multifunctional Gate Box combines guard locking, handle and control elements on one door. Non-contact switches include the CES-IA set and the CES-AP RFID safety switch, and the CTP-I version provides monitoring without guard locking.

Control devices include the ZSM and ZSB three-position enabling switches, the RPS emergency stop rope pull switch, the ESM safety relays (including versions with time-delayed contacts and the ESM-TE301 expansion) and the MSC modular safety controller.

Where EUCHNER components are used

Safety guards and doors on machine tools, robot cells, presses, packaging machines and conveyor systems, emergency stop along conveyors and enabling during setup and teaching. A switch or actuator is one part of a safety function; the complete system must be designed and validated for its application.

Ordering EUCHNER components: what we need

Send the full order number or item number from the label, the coding level and actuator required, the supply voltage and the connection type. For replacements, also give the installed device details and the mating components such as actuators and handle modules.
