Schmersal AZM201 Solenoid Interlock Safety Switch

Description

The Schmersal AZM201 is an RFID-coded solenoid interlock for safety guards on machines. It locks a guard door closed with a holding force of 2,000 N, monitors either the locked state or only the guard position, and is rated up to Category 4, PL e and SIL 3. It is optimised for mounting on 40 mm profiles and can be combined with a wide range of actuators for hinged and sliding guards.

Guard locking with RFID coding

Schmersal builds the AZM201 in two monitoring versions. In the AZM201Z version the safety outputs are enabled only when the guard is closed and the interlock is locked, which is the choice for personnel protection. In the AZM201B version the outputs are enabled as soon as the guard is closed, for process protection where locking is not mandatory. Both are available in standard coding, individual coding (I1) and individual coding with re-teaching (I2), and the individually coded versions reach coding level high under ISO 14119.

Diagnostics are either a conventional p-type diagnostic output or a serial SD interface, which lets up to 31 devices be wired in series and read by an SD gateway or safety controller without reducing the safety level. An AS-Interface version, the AZM201 AS, and a version with a freely assignable pushbutton and signal LED (type 2965) are also in the family. The photo on this page shows the pushbutton variant. For other Schmersal guard devices see Schmersal 432Y-M20 and the wider range of safety switches and guard locking.

Actuators and accessories

The actuator is ordered separately. The brochure lists the B1 compact actuator for sliding doors, the B30 door-handle actuator with a handle or rotating knob for hinged guards, versions with three-point locking rods, and the B40 for rotating doors with overlapping folds. Options include a lockout tag, an emergency exit for accessible hazardous areas, and retrofit kits. Please give the monitoring type, coding, diagnostic type, termination and actuator when requesting a quotation, so that the complete order code can be confirmed.

How the Schmersal AZM201 works

A coded actuator on the guard door enters the switch head. The switch reads the code by RFID. A solenoid then drives a locking pin that holds the actuator with a force of 2,000 N. The safety outputs switch on to the controller, and the machine can run. To open the guard, the solenoid releases the pin.

Where the AZM201 is used

  • Machine guards on hinged doors
  • Sliding guards
  • Guards on 40 mm profile frames
  • Packaging and assembly lines
  • Machines with run-on motion after stop

Selection checklist for the AZM201

  • Version Z for personnel protection or B for process protection
  • Standard or individual coding
  • Conventional or serial SD diagnostics
  • Actuator type
  • 24 V DC supply
  • Mounting on a 40 mm profile
  • Ambient temperature
  • Pushbutton and LED variant

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the AZM201

Fix the switch to the frame and the actuator to the door with the screws that cannot be removed. Align them so the actuator enters freely. Wire the supply and the safety outputs. Test the lock and release on each guard. Check the alignment at each service.

About brand

Guard doors, machine covers and end positions are the usual places to find a Schmersal switch. The company, founded in 1945 and based in Wuppertal, Germany, specializes in safety switches and safety sensors for machinery. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists Schmersal switchgear for maintenance and machine-building customers in Oman and the GCC, at present the AZM201 solenoid interlock safety switch and the US 432Y-M20 pneumatically operated limit switch.

Schmersal product groups

Schmersal arranges its program in a few groups: safe switching and monitoring for guard doors and hazardous zones, safe signal processing with safety relay modules and programmable safety controllers, automation technology such as position switches, sensors and command devices, devices for Ex zones with gas or dust atmospheres, and lift switchgear. The US 432Y-M20 on our site belongs with the position switches.

Ordering Schmersal spares: what we need

Send the full type designation from the housing and, if printed, the article number. Add the contact arrangement, the actuator form, the cable entry thread and the voltage. For Ex versions, state the marking shown on the label. A photo of the switch and its label is the quickest way to an exact match.
