Woodward easYgen-3500-5 Genset Controller (5 A CT)

Description

easYgen-3500-5 easYgen-3500 genset controller with 5 A current inputs

The Woodward easYgen-3500-5 is an easYgen-3500, a genset control for complex breaker applications in the easYgen-3000 series. The suffix in the model name states the rated secondary of the current transformer inputs: the easYgen-3500-5 is built for 5 A CTs, while easYgen-3500-1 is the sister version for 1 A CTs. The controller manages generator start and stop, synchronising, load sharing for up to 32 gensets, and breaker control including generator, mains and generator-group breakers, and it can interact with up to 16 Woodward LS-5 circuit breaker controllers. Seven Star LLC supplies easYgen-3500-5 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

Decoding easYgen-3500-5 and the easYgen-3000 naming

Element Meaning
easYgen-3500 Genset control for complex paralleling with LS-5 breaker control and multi-grid applications
-5 Current transformer rated secondary 5 A (Irated 5 A)
P1 / P2 Package level; P2 adds extra analog I/O types and relay outputs, so confirm it on the label
Display variants Plastic front-panel housing with display, or sheet-metal housing for cabinet back mounting without display

The product specification is shared with the easYgen-3400, which has the same hardware family but a simpler breaker set. Where a name appears as easYgen-3500-5 without a package suffix, read the P1 or P2 mark on the nameplate before ordering a spare.

Why choose the 5 A CT version of easYgen-3500-5

Five-ampere CTs are the usual choice in most generator switchgear, especially where the CT sits close to the controller or the existing plant has standardised on 5 A. The 5 A version of the controller carries a short-time rating of 10 times Irated for one second, against 50 times for the 1 A version, and the burden figure for both is below 0.15 VA. Before ordering a spare, read the CT ratio on the single-line diagram, because a mismatch between the CT secondary and the controller input rating causes a fivefold error in current, power and protection thresholds. When the system has both kinds of CTs across different gensets, label the spare controllers clearly.

How the controller works: functions you get with easYgen-3500-5

The unit combines measuring, protection, synchronising and sequencing. FlexApp lets the integrator choose the breaker set, from none to generator and mains breakers or a generator group breaker. LogicsManager provides programmable logic for relay and control functions, three freely configurable PID controllers can drive heating, level or pressure loops, and an operating mode set of Auto, Stop, Manual and test modes is available. Supported engine controllers include several J1939 and CANopen ECUs, and I/O expansion boards can be added. For multi-unit plants the unit supports run-up synchronisation, import and export control, and load-dependent start and stop.

Selecting and ordering easYgen-3500-5: checklist

  • Confirm the CT secondary on the plant drawings: 5 A for easYgen-3500-5.
  • Read P1 or P2 on the nameplate.
  • Decide on front-panel mounting with display or cabinet mounting without display.
  • Check the voltage class: 100 V AC or 400 V AC measuring inputs.
  • Check the supply: 12/24 V DC battery.
  • List the CAN and Modbus connections to the rest of the system.
  • Obtain the parameter file from the installed unit.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of easYgen-3500-5

Wire the current inputs to 5 A secondary CTs and check polarity and phase sequence before the first synchronisation. Check the voltage measuring ratios, and remember that CT secondary circuits must never be opened under load. Load the parameter file with the service software, check the mapping of every relay and input, and test the protection limits on a dummy load before putting the genset on the bus. Keep a saved copy of the parameter set for the spare.

easYgen-3500-5 applications in Oman and the GCC

Genset controllers of this class are found in power plants with parallel diesel or gas engines, standby power for oil and gas facilities, desalination and utility sites, and industrial microgrids. In Oman and the GCC they must work with battery supplies at remote sites and tolerate heat in switchgear rooms, so the −20 to +70 °C range and the 12/24 V DC supply are practical. Because 5 A CTs are widely used in generator switchgear, this version is often the one needed for like-for-like replacement.

About brand

Woodward is an American designer of control systems for engines, turbines and aircraft, founded in 1870 by Amos Woodward in Rockford, Illinois, to make governors for water wheels. It is now headquartered in Fort Collins, Colorado, and listed on Nasdaq. Its governors, actuators and controllers manage speed and load on gas and steam turbines, reciprocating engines and generator sets.

Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Woodward turbine controls, synchronizers and gas fuel valves for operators in Oman and the GCC, working from the part number on the unit.

Ordering Woodward parts: what we need

Woodward identifies hardware by a part number in two digit groups, such as 8440-1667 for one SPM-D10 version, printed on the nameplate with a revision letter and serial number. Send all three. For a 505XT, add the supply voltage version and whether the turbine has extraction or admission. For a synchronizer, give the measuring voltage and the exact SPM-D10 variant. For a TecJet, state the fuel gas, flow size and engine control signal.

Facts checked against Woodward's own company history, October 2026.
