KERN IXC 100K-3-EX2 ATEX Zone 2/22 Platform Scale 150 kg

Description

Stainless steel platform scale for ATEX zone 2 and zone 22 areas

The KERN IXC 100K-3-EX2 is a bench-top platform scale that KERN classifies as a category 3 device for use in zone 2 (gas) and zone 22 (dust) under Directive 2014/34/EU. Despite the model name, the weighing capacity printed in the datasheet is 150 kg with a readability of 5 g. A stainless steel weighing plate (500 x 400 mm) sits on a powder-coated steel base with a silicone-coated aluminium load cell, and a stainless steel display device with a 48 mm backlit digit height is connected by a 2.7 m cable.

The brochure lists the chemical, pharmaceutical, food and wood-processing industries as main uses. In oil, gas and petrochemical plants the same logic applies wherever dosing, sampling or packing of additives, catalysts, solvents and powders is done in a classified area and a standard laboratory balance cannot be brought in. The scale lets an operator weigh and record batches in the zone rather than carrying product out to a safe area.

Key features from the datasheet

  • ATEX class for gas: II 3G Ex ec [ic] IIC T4 Gc; for dust: II 3D Ex tc [ic] IIIC T80 degrees C Dc, as printed in the KERN brochure.
  • Display device in stainless steel with IP65 / IP69 protection and integrated power supply; load cell IP65.
  • Counting, percentage determination, tolerance weighing with acoustic and visual signals, sum memory and averaging for unstable conditions.
  • Up to four optional interfaces at once: RS-232, Ethernet, USB-Device or analogue (0-10 V, 4-20 mA) plus WiFi and Bluetooth BLE (factory-fitted options).
  • KERN Communication Protocol (KCP) for remote control, and an optional alibi memory with 250,000 memory spaces.
  • Optional external Li-Ion rechargeable pack (YKR-06-EX2) for mobile work in hazardous areas; a second pack (YKR-04-EX2) allows continuous use while charging.

Services printed on the datasheet: adjustment at the installation site (961-249), DAkkS calibration (963-129) and a certificate of conformity (969-517).

Installation and operation notes

The brochure is explicit that the scale is supplied with a roughly 2.5 m mains cable with open ends and without a plug. The connection must be made by a qualified electrician in accordance with EN 60079-14, for example through a junction box or control cabinet. A suitable enclosure is needed inside the Ex zone, or the connection can be made outside it. A standard domestic socket is not intended. Level the platform with the adjustable feet and level indicator, allow the 120 min warm-up, and adjust with the 150 kg reference weight (M1). Keep within -10 to 40 degrees C.

Applications in hazardous and harsh areas

Gulf facilities with classified areas, such as chemical blending rooms, additive dosing skids, paint and coating stores or dust-handling bagging stations, are natural fits for a zone 2 / zone 22 scale. Stainless steel and IP65 / IP69 washdown protection suit cleaning with hoses in dusty, humid environments. Zone assignments and temperature class T4 must always be confirmed against the site area classification by the plant safety engineer.

Accessories and related items

KERN lists the external Li-Ion battery YKR-04-EX2, the charging station YKR-05-EX2, the battery-operated configuration YKR-06-EX2, tripods IXC-A01 and IXC-A02, the alibi memory YMM-06-EX2 and Ex interface modules KUM-01-EX2 (RS-232), KUM-03-EX2 (USB), KUM-04-EX2 (Ethernet) and KUM-08-EX2 (analogue). Further instruments are listed under our portable test and measurement instruments.

Calibration note

Check the scale regularly with a known test weight, and arrange calibration where readings are used for quality records. Installation in Ex areas must follow the certificate and local rules.
