EBRO EP3 Electro-Pneumatic Positioner with IO-Link

Description

A compact positioner that turns a pneumatic actuator into a control valve

The EP3 is EBRO ARMATUREN’s electro-pneumatic positioner. It mounts directly on a part-turn pneumatic actuator through a VDI/VDE 3845 interface, reads the valve angle with a non-contact angle sensor, and drives the actuator through a 5/3-way or 3/3-way solenoid valve and a throttle unit. The result is a self-contained package that accepts a 4-20 mA or 0-10 V setpoint and positions the valve over a 100 degree recording range.

Setup happens at the unit with its pushbutton and RGB light element, or remotely over IO-Link and Bluetooth, so no laptop is strictly needed on site. The unit also carries acceleration and temperature sensors.

Explosion protection and communication

An optional ATEX version carries the marking Ex II 3G/D. The switch box is Ex II 3 G Ex ec IIC T5 Gc X and Ex II 3 D Ex tc IIIC T85 °C X Dc, the valve is Ex II 3 G Ex h IIC T6 Gb and Ex II 3 D Ex h IIIC T80 °C, the coil is II 3G ec IIC Tx Gc and II 3D tc IIIC Tx °C Dc, and the plug is II 2G eb IIC T5 Gb and II 2D tb IIIC T100 °C Db. IO-Link runs at COM3 (230.4 kBaud), revision 1.1.3, class A, with a minimum cycle time of 10 ms. The unit carries CE and IO-Link conformity, and further approvals are available on request.

Wiring and installation notes

Terminal block X1 carries PE, +24 V for external sensors and for the conventional supply, 0 V, analog inputs 1 and 2, feedback OPEN, CLOSED and third position, and the analog feedback outputs; X2 handles the supply and IO-Link master lines. Supply air must be neutral gas or air to ISO 8573-1 class 7-4-4. Choose the connection code and the actuator size position of the type code to match the EB or SC actuator on the valve.

Typical use

EP3 positioners suit process plants that need modulating control on pneumatic part-turn actuators, such as dosing and flow control in water treatment, chemical skids or district cooling. The listed -20 °C to +60 °C limit is relevant for outdoor mounting in hot sun, where a shade or an enclosure may be needed; the ATEX version is rated -10 °C to +40 °C.

Information to send with an RFQ for the EBRO EP3 Electro-Pneumatic Positioner with IO-Link

A positioner has to match both the actuator and the control system. For the EBRO EP3 Electro-Pneumatic Positioner with IO-Link, give the actuator type (linear or rotary, single or double acting), its stroke or rotation angle, and the mounting standard on the valve. List the input signal from the control system and any feedback signal required back to it.

  • Supply air pressure and quality available on site.
  • Communication needs, such as HART or a digital fieldbus.
  • Ambient temperature range and enclosure protection required.
  • Quantity and whether mounting kits for existing valves are needed.

Including the valve and actuator data lets the positioner be supplied with the correct mounting parts so it can be fitted without modification on site.
