TSI DustTrak II 8530 Desktop Aerosol Monitor 0.001 to 400 mg/m3

Description

Real-time dust concentration for fugitive dust and workplace surveys

The TSI DustTrak II 8530 is a desktop aerosol monitor that reports mass concentration in real time using 90-degree light scattering. The range runs from 0.001 to 400 mg/m3 and the particle size range is approximately 0.1 to 10 micrometres. A 5.7 in. colour touchscreen handles set-up, and the 8530 adds Ethernet and analog or relay outputs that the handheld 8532 lacks.

Because the optical reading is calibrated to ISO 12103-1 A1 Arizona test dust, it suits workplace dust surveys and ambient or fugitive dust monitoring. The related 8530EP external-pump version covers long unattended runs. See also Portable Test & Measurement.

Features in the manual

  • Run modes Survey, Manual Log and Log Mode 1 to 5; adjustable time constant 1 to 60 seconds; 45 days of data at 1-minute samples.
  • Size-selective inlets: PM1, PM2.5, PM4 (respirable) and PM10 impactors, plus a Dorr-Oliver cyclone that needs 1.7 L/min for a 4 micrometre cut.
  • Up to ten stored user calibration factors, plus factory Ambient and Factory cals.
  • Removable 37 mm gravimetric cartridge, selectable 0 to 5 V or 4 to 20 mA output, relay alarm and optional AutoZero module.

8530, 8530EP or 8532?

The 8530 desktop has the internal pump, larger screen, Ethernet and analog or relay outputs. The 8530EP is the same desktop monitor with an external pump, intended for continuous operation over days to months under wide temperature swings, and is warranted for one full year or 8760 hours of pump operation. The 8532 handheld has a 3.5 in. screen, a 150 mg/m3 range and no analog output.

The DustTrak DRX 8533 on a separate page adds simultaneous size-segregated readings; the 8530 reports a single mass concentration and relies on impactors for size cuts.

Set-up, zeroing and care

Use only TSI batteries and do not substitute non-rechargeable cells. Fit the inlet cap for environmental sampling so that large objects and direct light do not reach the chamber; fit an impactor instead of the cap for a size cut, and keep the flow at the factory 3.0 L/min for correct cut points. Oil the impaction plate as described in the maintenance chapter.

The AutoZero module (P/N 801690) re-zeros desktop units during long runs: one minute per zero, log interval at least two minutes. The alarm output is not for hazardous-condition detection or life-safety protection, must not be wired to AC power, and needs safety-certified equipment on the analog and alarm connector. For outdoor use the manual recommends the Model 8535 environmental enclosure with the external-pump version.

Dust monitoring on Gulf construction and industrial sites

In the Gulf the DustTrak II is used for fugitive dust at construction sites, quarries, cement and bulk handling, and for respirable dust surveys in workshops. The Ambient Cal suits outdoor dust, while the Factory Cal suits most workplace aerosol. Sand-laden air can load the inlet filters, so inspect and replace internal filters as the maintenance chapter describes.

Parts and options named in the manual

Standard items include the 801667 impactor kit, 801691 Dorr-Oliver cyclone, 801674 impactor oil, 801698 inlet caps, 801680 desktop Li-Ion battery, 801652 analog or alarm cable and zero filter 800663. Options include 801675 external pump kit, 801685 two-bay charger, 801690 zero module and TrakPro data analysis software.

Selection and installation notes

Aerosol and particle instruments are selected from the particle size, the concentration range and the sampling method of the survey. Zero the instrument with the filter before each run, keep the inlet and the sampling line clean, use the correct flow and calibration factor for the aerosol and keep the instrument calibration and any service according to the maker schedule and your quality system. Record the location, the time and the activity with each result.
