TDK B44066S2410J230 Capacitor Contactor 22 kvar, 230 V Coil

Description

A capacitor contactor that pre-charges each step through resistors

The TDK B44066S2410J230 is a three-pole capacitor contactor from the EPCOS B44066S range, built for switching one stage of a power factor correction bank. The J in the code marks the version with leading contacts and resistor spirals that pre-charge the capacitor before the main contacts close; the 230 means a 220 to 240 V AC coil at 50 Hz. According to the datasheet it switches 10.5 to 22 kvar on 415 to 440 V networks (10 to 20 kvar at 380 to 400 V) with an AC6b operational current of 14 to 28 A.

The S2410 body sits between the small S1810 (0 to 13 kvar at 415 to 440 V) and the S3210 (10.5 to 27 kvar). It is a good fit where the bank is made of 12.5, 15 or 20 kvar steps and you want a compact unit with one auxiliary contact already fitted.

How the J and N versions differ

The installation manual divides the range into J types for conventional banks without reactors and N types for detuned banks. N230 contactors have no pre-charge resistors and may only be used in detuned systems with reactors, so using an N type on a plain bank is not permitted. This page is the J230 version with resistors, so it is the right one when the bank has no series reactors; with reactors the datasheet raises contact life from 0.15 to 0.30 million operations.

Selection and cable sizing

  • Pick the contactor by capacitor current, not only by kvar. At 415 V a 20 kvar step draws about 28 A (derived), the top of the AC6b range.
  • The manual compares AC6b with Ith: for the S2410 the reserve over the capacitor current is 60 % at 50 C and 43 % at 60 C, against the 30 % minimum quoted from EN 61921.
  • Use copper cable only at the terminals; the manual forbids soldering strands and says insulation must not be clamped.
  • Supply cable cross sections follow IEC 60947-1 table 9; the manual quotes 25 mm2 for 85 A and 10 mm2 for 50 A.
  • Protect the step with gL/gG fuses between 50 A and 80 A as per the datasheet.

Installation notes for switchrooms

The datasheet warns that only difficultly inflammable, self-extinguishing materials may be used near the resistor spirals because abnormal temperatures cannot be excluded there. The manual also asks for storage away from corrosive atmospheres, meaning chloride, sulphide, acid, alkali or salt, and for regular cleaning in dusty rooms. Do not install a contactor that is mechanically damaged. If auxiliary contacts are used to switch discharge resistors, keep that current below the 3 A AC15 rating.

GCC use cases

Automatic capacitor banks in 415 V substations, motor control centres of desalination and pumping stations, and air-conditioning plant rooms are the typical homes for this size of contactor. In hot switchrooms note that the capacitor power figures are given up to 60 C, which gives headroom for cabinets that run warm. Pair it with a power factor controller that provides the step outputs, and with capacitors from the same EPCOS range, for example the DeltaCap X Black can. See the electrical and power category.

Selection and installation notes

A power factor correction component is selected from the capacitor bank rating, the supply voltage and the network harmonics. Check the rated voltage and current against the actual duty, allow for the cooling and clearances on the data sheet, tighten the terminals to the torque on the data sheet and fit the protection the maker names. Where the network has strong harmonics, a detuned bank with reactors is the safer choice.

Information needed for a quotation

Send the full model code, the quantity, the delivery location in Oman or the GCC, the intended use and any accessories needed, so that the complete package can be quoted together.

Documents and supply information

The manufacturer data sheet is attached to this page and should be read together with the project specification and the site risk assessment before a purchase is confirmed. Ratings, standards and dimensions are quoted as printed on that sheet. Lead time, stock position and certificates available with the shipment are confirmed in the quotation, and we supply to Oman and the wider GCC region for industrial, utility and building services projects.
