Brand:

Hattersley Fig. 5N and 5NLS Bronze Needle Globe Valve

Description

Bronze needle valve for fine adjustment, with a lockshield version

The Hattersley Fig. 5N is a bronze needle globe valve in the PN32 Series B range, covered on one data sheet with the Fig. 5NLS. It has a rising stem, a screwed bonnet and a robust spherical bronze body, and the manufacturer lists accurate flow regulation and control up to 32 bar. Ends are taper threaded to BS EN 10226 (ISO 7-1, formerly BS 21).

The data sheet drawing shows two forms: the 5N with a handwheel and the 5NLS lockshield version. The lockshield key reference printed for all sizes is Fig. 391 IP, so a tamper-resistant setting can be locked and only adjusted with the key.

Features

  • Needle-type globe valve for precise control
  • Rising stem, screwed bonnet
  • Cast bronze body and bonnet; brass stem, packing nut and handwheel nut
  • Aluminium handwheel and identification plate
  • Lockshield version (5NLS) with Fig. 391 IP key
  • Up to 32 bar

Selection and ordering guide

Choose the 5N where a user may adjust the valve, and the 5NLS where the setting must not be altered by occupants, for example on a balancing or bypass line. Sizes stop at 1 inch, unlike the standard Fig. 13 globe valve that goes to 2 inch. The data sheet gives only BS taper threads, so for NPT check availability before ordering. The 5N is a regulating valve; it is not intended as a tight shut-off, which is general engineering advice not stated on the sheet.

Operation and installation notes

Needle-type globe valves give fine control with many turns of the stem, so they suit small-bore instrument, sampling and bypass lines. Keep flow direction in line with any arrow on the body, and tighten threaded joints with a sealing method suited to taper threads (the sheet does not specify one). In balancing duty, record the turns open at commissioning.

Applications

Typical uses are hot and cold water and heating circuits, small bypass lines and drain points. In GCC building services, lockshield globe valves are common on terminal units and chilled water balancing branches, where they are set once at commissioning.

Reading the 5N data sheet: materials and tests

The sheet lists a cast bronze body and bonnet to BS EN 1982 CC491K and brass stem and nuts to BS EN 12164. Those designations are the European standard grade names, so a project specification that cites ASTM B62 C83600 for the body can be matched directly to the ASTM column printed beside them. Stem material is given as brass to BS EN 12164 CW617N, with ASTM B124 alloy 2 as the equivalent reference.

Tests are pneumatic at 6 bar for both shell and seat. For a needle valve the seat test is less meaningful as a leakage guarantee than for a gate or ball valve, because needle seats are made for control, so if a bubble-tight shut-off is required in addition to regulation, install a separate isolating valve upstream such as the Fig. 116 ball valve.

The lockshield key quoted on the sheet is the Fig. 391 IP, listed for every size from 1/4 to 1 inch, so one key type serves the whole 5NLS range.

Specification checklist before ordering

Confirm the size from 1/4 to 1 inch, the version (Fig. 5N handwheel or Fig. 5NLS lockshield), the working pressure up to 32 bar at -10 to 100 C and the medium. If tamper resistance is wanted for a balancing or instrument application, specify the lockshield form and order the Fig. 391 IP key at the same time. The sheet prints 14 bar at 198 C, so confirm the pressure at the real operating temperature.

Handling and storage

Needle valves have a fine seat that is easily damaged by dirt, so keep them capped until installation, flush the line, and close them gently by hand without a wrench on the handwheel.

Information needed for a quotation

Send the figure number, size, version, quantity and the delivery location in Oman or the GCC, along with the pressure, temperature and medium.

Documents and supply information

The manufacturer data sheet is attached to this page and should be read together with any project specification before a purchase is confirmed. Material grades, test pressures and dimensions are quoted exactly as printed on that sheet. Lead time, stock position and certificates available with the shipment are confirmed in the quotation, and we supply to Oman and the wider GCC region for industrial, utility and building services projects.

About brand

Hattersley is a British valve brand, part of Crane, with a manufacturing history that begins in 1897. Its range covers general valves, public health valves for hot and cold water, balancing and flow management valves and strainers.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Hattersley valves by figure number for building services and utility pipework in Oman and the GCC.

Hattersley product series

Bronze valves include the Fig. 13 globe valve and the Fig. 5N and 5NLS needle globe valves, the Fig. C31 gate valve, the Fig. 116 and 116EXT full bore ball valves, the Fig. 1013 horizontal lift check valve and the Fig. 907 Y-type strainer.

Larger valves include the Fig. M511 cast iron flanged gate valve, the Fig. 950 semi-lugged and Fig. 980 ANSI fully lugged butterfly valves and the Fig. 861 non-slam check valve. Hattersley tests every valve to its product standard, and many valves carry WRAS approval.
