Swagelok SS-83KF4 Trunnion Ball Valve, 1/4 in. FNPT, PCTFE Seats

Description

The Swagelok SS-83KF4 is a compact quarter-turn ball valve for high-pressure instrument and sample lines. It belongs to the 83 series, a trunnion-mounted ball design with spring-loaded seats and a rating of 6000 psig (413 bar) at ambient temperature, and has 1/4 in. female NPT ports in a straight 2-way pattern. PCTFE seats give tight shutoff for gases and liquids within the seat temperature range.

Trunnion design for small, high-pressure valves

In a conventional floating-ball valve the line pressure pushes the ball against the downstream seat, which raises operating torque as pressure rises. In a trunnion-style valve the ball is held by the stem and a lower trunnion, so seat loading comes from springs rather than line pressure. The catalog says the trunnion ball prevents ball blowout and contributes to low operating torque, while the bottom-loaded stem prevents stem blowout, and spring-loaded seats keep the seal leak-tight at both low and high pressure and reduce seat wear from surges.

The catalog states that Swagelok ball valves are for fully open or fully closed use only. Do not throttle with them.

Ratings and flow

The 83 series is rated at 6000 psig (413 bar) at 100 F for 316 stainless steel, and the seat material sets the temperature: PCTFE or reinforced nylon covers 0 to 250 F, while PEEK seats extend to 450 F. For 2-way valves the flow coefficient ranges from 1.0 to 1.6 depending on end connection; the 1/4 in. female NPT version has a Cv of 1.0 and a 0.187 in. orifice. Dimensions in the catalog table are 2.94 in. (74.7 mm) by 1.47 in. (37.3 mm). Panel mounting is possible, with a panel hole of 29/32 in. (23.0 mm) and a maximum panel thickness of 0.38 in. (9.7 mm).

Seat material is selected by the final letter before the end code: K is PCTFE, T is PTFE, N is reinforced nylon and P is PEEK. So SS-83KF4 becomes SS-83TF4 with PTFE seats.

Ordering and selecting

SS-83KF4 decodes as stainless steel, 83 series, PCTFE seats (K), female NPT (F) and 1/4 in. (4). The same body is offered with 1/8 in. NPT, 3/8 in. and 1/2 in. ends and in Swagelok tube-fitting versions such as SS-83KS4. Alloy 400 bodies use M in place of SS. If your pressure exceeds 6000 psig, the H83 series with PEEK seats is the next step, such as SS-H83PF4, rated up to 10 000 psig depending on end connection.

Confirm service conditions, fluid compatibility with PCTFE and the temperature before ordering, and fit actuators from the Swagelok list only if torque and mounting are checked with the ISO 5211 guidance in the catalog family.

About brand

Swagelok is the American maker of tube fittings and small-bore valves, best known for its two-ferrule compression tube fitting. Fred A. Lennon and Cullen B. Crawford founded it in Cleveland, Ohio, in July 1947 as Crawford Fitting Company to make that fitting. Lennon bought the whole business and the patent in 1948, and the company has been based in Solon, Ohio, since the mid-1960s.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Swagelok tube fittings, needle, ball, check, relief and metering valves, filters, regulators and sample cylinders, and supply them for instrument tubing and analyser systems in Oman and the GCC by exact part number.

A Swagelok part number can be read directly. In SS-810-6, "SS" is 316 stainless steel, "810" means a 1/2 in. tube fitting (8 sixteenths of an inch, 10 series), and "-6" is a union. A suffix such as "-8" adds a 1/2 in. NPT end, and "M0" marks metric tube, as in SS-12M0-6 for 12 mm. Tube fittings must be made up the same way every time: finger-tight, then 1 1/4 turns for most sizes. A gap inspection gauge confirms the fitting has been pulled up.

Where Swagelok products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Swagelok fittings and valves are used on instrument impulse lines, analyser sample systems, hydraulic and pneumatic control tubing, chemical injection and gas sampling in oil and gas, refining, petrochemical, power and laboratory installations.

Ordering Swagelok products: what we need

Send the full Swagelok part number (for example SS-810-6 or SS-1RS4), the material, and the tube size in inches or millimetres. For valves, add the end connections and any options. For sample cylinders, add the volume, pressure rating and end configuration.
