Using it in the field

A sonic sensor measures distance from the echo time, so it sees glass, clear film, liquids and coloured surfaces that defeat optical sensors. With a 15 cm blind zone and temperature compensation, this model is a common choice for tank and hopper level, roll diameter, and stack height measurement. The teach range can be set by pushbutton or adapter, and the IO-Link interface passes the process value as 16-bit data for PLC diagnostics and remote parameter change.

Installation hint: aim the sensing face squarely at the target, keep the blind zone clear of obstructions, and avoid mounting next to strong air currents, steam or dust clouds that attenuate sound. Soft or sloping surfaces reflect less energy, so test with the actual material before finalising the position.

Ordering code and what to confirm

The type code starts with RU and the nominal range figure used in the datasheet features, followed by the housing size and the output elements; the letter that follows the range differs between proximity, retroreflective and diffuse variants of the same family, so always order by the full code. Ident number 1610026 identifies this exact version, which the datasheet lists with function Proximity and output NO/NC, PNP/NPN, analog output.

Points to confirm with us before ordering: the required sensing range and blind zone against your target and tank geometry, the supply voltage, the connector and cable, the output type (analog, the process or ambient temperature, and switching or IO-Link). Everything in the table comes from the datasheet as published, so the maker document is the final reference.

Mounting the M18 sensor for a clean echo

Fix the RU130U in a rigid bracket so that vibration does not change the aim of the sound beam, and tighten the M18 housing only as far as the Turck instructions allow. On tanks and hoppers, position the sensing face away from the filling stream, agitators, ladders and side walls that can return false echoes inside the beam. Keep the area in front of the face free of objects closer than the 15 cm blind zone, and allow for the highest product level so the target never enters that zone. Where several ultrasonic sensors work close to each other, check the manufacturer’s guidance on spacing so their signals do not interfere.

Wiring and commissioning with a PLC

Use a screened M12 connection cable suited to the environment and follow the pin assignment in the datasheet when connecting the supply, switching output and analog output. Decide whether the analog channel will be read as current or voltage and check the load resistance limits in the table against the PLC input card. After power-up, wait for the readiness delay, then teach the measuring range with the real target at its minimum and maximum positions. If the sensor will run in IO-Link mode, load the device description into the engineering tool, confirm that the process value appears correctly and store the parameter set so a replacement can be configured the same way.

Ultrasonic sensing in Omani heat, dust and humidity

Sound travels faster in hot air, and although the sensor compensates for temperature, strong temperature differences between the sensor and the target, such as hot product in a cooler tank or direct sun on one side of a silo, can still affect the reading. Shade sensors mounted outdoors. Heavy dust clouds during filling, condensation and fine sand blown by wind attenuate the signal, so verify the reading under the dustiest real conditions, not only during a quiet test. In humid coastal plants, condensation on the transducer face can disturb measurement, so consider where moisture collects before choosing the mounting point.

Inspection and maintenance

The sensor has no moving parts, but the transducer face must stay clean. Inspect it during routine rounds and remove dust or product build-up gently, without scratching the face or using aggressive cleaning agents. Check the connector and cable for damage and moisture, and confirm that the bracket has not shifted. Compare the reading with a manual level check from time to time; a drifting or unstable value usually points to build-up, misalignment or a changed process condition.

About brand

Turck is a German manufacturer of sensors, connectivity and fieldbus technology for factory and process automation, founded in 1965 and headquartered in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The family-owned group develops and manufactures sensors, connectors, interface technology and I/O systems.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Turck sensors and I/O devices for machine builders and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC.

Turck product series

Most of the Turck products here are inductive proximity sensors: threaded M12, M18 and M30 barrels in flush (BI) and non-flush (NI) versions, uprated-range (U) sensors, rectangular CP40 and CP80 housings and BIM magnetic-field sensors for detecting pistons in pneumatic cylinders. The type code describes the sensor; in BI5-M18-AP6X-H1141, BI means flush mounting, 5 is the switching distance in mm, AP6X a three-wire PNP output and H1141 the M12 connector.

Turck also makes RU ultrasonic sensors, PS pressure, TS temperature and LS level sensors, FCI inline flow sensors, the CMVT vibration and temperature sensor for condition monitoring over IO-Link, and fieldbus and Ethernet I/O modules and communication components.

Where Turck sensors are used

Position detection on conveyors, packaging machines, presses and robotic cells; level, pressure and temperature monitoring on hydraulic units and process skids; and vibration monitoring on motors, pumps and fans.
