Veeder-Root Mag-FLEX In-Tank Probes for Tall Tanks
Description
Flexible probe for tall tanks, with wired and wireless versions
The Veeder-Root Mag-FLEX in-tank probes monitor gas, diesel and alternative fluids in underground and aboveground tanks that are too tall for a rigid probe. The probe has a corrugated flexible shaft of stainless steel 316 Ti, a stainless steel 303 canister, floats and a weight, and measures product level, water level and temperature.
Twenty part-number configurations are listed: UL/cUL (0889591) and ATEX/IECEx (0889561) versions, each wired or wireless, with gasoline and water floats, diesel and water floats, no water float, methanol tanks without water float, or plastic tanks without water floats. All are inventory-only probes with no leak detection.

Installation points for tall tanks
The datasheet’s installation drawing marks the insertion measuring point, riser dimensions, null zone, measured insertion length, weight length, dead zone and the tank grounding bracket and grounding cable. Order the smaller probe when the measured insertion length falls between two lengths, and use the non-magnetic weight in plastic tanks, where clearance off the bottom applies. Plastic tall-tank probes do not have the conductive magnet casing.
Low-level water float kits (4 in opening required, wall guide included) connect to the existing water float to reduce the minimum water measurement to 1.9 in.
What to confirm before ordering
- Tank material (steel or plastic) and height, to choose the correct part-number group and probe length.
- Fluid: gasoline, diesel, methanol or DEF, which decides the float configuration.
- Wired or wireless, and UL/cUL or ATEX/IECEx approval.
- Console and its software version, because the UL/cUL versions require version 6.A or higher.
Key features of the Mag-FLEX design
- A corrugated flexible shaft in stainless steel 316 Ti, so a probe up to 72.1 ft (22 m) long can be handled and fed into a tall tank without a single rigid section of that length.
- Simultaneous measurement of product level, water level and temperature from one probe, with five thermistors spread along the length for temperature data.
- Product accuracy of 0.0800 in (2.032 mm) and resolution of 0.02 in (0.508 mm) per sample, as stated on the datasheet.
- Float configurations matched to the fluid: gasoline and water, diesel and water, no water float, methanol and plastic-tank (DEF/AdBlue) versions.
- Wired and wireless versions in both the UL/cUL (0889591) and ATEX/IECEx (0889561) families.
How the part number is built
The two seven-digit prefixes separate the approval family, and the first digit of the three-digit suffix selects the configuration. A wired gasoline probe with water float sits in the 4xx block, the wireless gasoline version in the 1xx block, and so on. The remaining digits relate to the length chosen for the tank. Because the same configuration set exists in both families, quote the full number from the datasheet table rather than only the suffix, so that the approval and the configuration are both clear.
| Suffix block | Configuration | Connection |
|---|---|---|
| 4xx / 1xx | Gasoline and water floats | Wired / wireless |
| 5xx / 2xx | Diesel and water floats | Wired / wireless |
| 6xx / 3xx | No water float | Wired / wireless |
| 8xx / 7xx | Methanol tanks, no water float | Wired / wireless |
| 9xx / 0xx | Plastic tanks, no water floats | Wired / wireless |
Inventory monitoring, not leak detection
Every Mag-FLEX configuration is listed as an inventory-only probe. It reports level, water and temperature to the console for stock reconciliation and delivery records, but it does not run the in-tank leak tests that some other probes support. Where a site needs a statistical or static leak test, that function has to come from another device or method approved for the purpose, and this should be settled with the system designer before the probe is ordered.
Applications in Oman and the GCC
Tall vertical aboveground tanks are common at fuel depots, power stations, desalination plants and mining or construction camps across Oman and the wider GCC, where diesel is stored for generators and vehicle fleets. A flexible probe suits these tanks because it can be carried to site coiled and installed through a riser without lifting a long rigid assembly over the roof. The stated operating range of -40 to +60 °C should be compared with the actual conditions inside risers and manholes, which can heat considerably in direct summer sun; shading of riser caps and junction boxes is good practice. For DEF/AdBlue stored in plastic tanks at truck depots, the plastic-tank versions with the non-magnetic weight apply.
Maintenance and good practice
- Fit the recommended 0848100-004 overvoltage protection device, one per probe, especially at sites exposed to lightning or long cable runs.
- Keep the tank grounding bracket and cable shown in the installation drawing in place and check them during routine inspections.
- When the probe is removed for tank cleaning, check the floats for free movement and the shaft for mechanical damage before reinstalling.
- Compare console readings with manual dips periodically so any drift or float problem is noticed early.
What to include in an RFQ
A complete enquiry lets us match the configuration on the first attempt. Please state the tank material and internal height, the riser size and the measured insertion length if known, the stored fluid, whether a low-level water float kit is wanted (it needs a 4 in opening), wired or wireless connection, the required approval family, and the console model with its software version. For aboveground tanks, also state whether the 0576008-708 2 in NPT adapter is required.
