Kärcher HDS 13/20-4 S Hot Water High-Pressure Cleaner
Description
Super-class hot water power for oil, grease and baked-on residue
The Kärcher HDS 13/20-4 S is the highest-output electric hot water high-pressure cleaner in the HDS super class listed here. Kärcher positions it for maximum performance in the harshest conditions, with a water-cooled four-pole electric motor, a robust three-piston axial pump and a fuel-oil fired burner that heats the water at the machine.
Hot water changes what a pressure washer can do. Heat dissolves oils, greases and lubricants that cold water only pushes around, and it shortens cleaning times on workshop floors, engines, drilling and process equipment, fleet vehicles and fabricated steel. With a flow of 600 to 1300 litres per hour and up to 200 bar, this model covers the heaviest duty among the electric HDS machines compared below.

eco!efficiency mode, equipment and scope of supply
In eco!efficiency mode the machine works in its most economical temperature range of about 60 °C with full water flow, and Kärcher states that the burner cycles are optimised to cut fuel consumption by 20 percent compared with full-load operation. The burner is described as proven Made in Germany technology.
The delivery includes an EASY!Force Advanced gun with Servo Control, a 10 m Longlife high-pressure hose specified as DN 8 and 400 bar, a 1050 mm lance and a power nozzle. Printed equipment includes two detergent tanks, a pressure cut-off, a pole reverse plug for the three-phase supply, dry-running protection, the Soft Damping System and an option for two-lance operation.

HDS 13/20-4 S against the other hot water models
Choose the HDS 13/20-4 S when large volumes of hot water are the limiting factor, for example on several-hour washdowns or when two lances are used. The table compares the HDS models shown in this catalogue, using the figures printed by Kärcher.
| Kärcher model | Flow rate (l/h) | Working pressure (bar) | Water temperature | Drive and load |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HDS 13/20-4 S (this page) | 600 – 1300 | 30 – 200 | min. 80 – max. 155 °C | Electric, 9.5 kW, 206 kg |

Choosing the right working setup
The HDS 13/20-4 S runs across a wide flow band of 600 to 1300 l/h and a pressure band of 30 to 200 bar, so the same machine can be set gently for painted panels and fully open for caked mud on a loader bucket. In practice, the most useful variable is temperature. Kärcher states a supply-referenced range of 80 to 155 °C, which means the unit can work in hot water mode for oils and greases and in its upper range for steam-type cleaning where the job calls for it.
- Light grease and road film: eco!efficiency mode at about 60 °C with full flow is usually enough and keeps fuel use down.
- Heavy oil, hydraulic leaks and engine bays: higher water temperature softens the residue so the jet lifts it rather than smearing it.
- Sensitive surfaces, seals and labels: reduce pressure and keep a sensible nozzle distance; hot water at high pressure can damage soft materials.
Three-phase supply and site power
This is a 400 V, 50 Hz, three-phase machine with a 9.5 kW connected load and a 5 m power cable. Before delivery, check that the wash bay has a correctly rated three-phase socket and protective device, and that any extension lead is sized for the current over its full length. A long, undersized lead causes voltage drop at motor start and is a common reason for nuisance trips on site.
Installation, fuel and water supply
Because the burner fires on fuel oil, the machine needs a well-ventilated location; it should not be run in a closed room where combustion gases can collect. The 25 l fuel tank supports long shifts, and at full load the stated consumption is 9.5 kg/h, falling to 7.6 kg/h in eco!efficiency mode, so the operator can plan refuelling around a shift.
The water supply must deliver at least the machine’s maximum flow, otherwise the pump runs short and wears. Where water comes from a tank rather than mains, confirm the suction arrangement allowed in the operating manual. Hard or brackish water, which is common from wells and tanker supplies, raises the risk of scale in the heating coil, so water softening or the manufacturer’s scale-protection measures should be part of the plan.
Routine maintenance points
- Check pump oil level and condition at the intervals given in the manual.
- Clean the water inlet filter regularly, especially with tanker or recycled water.
- Inspect high-pressure hoses, couplings and the trigger gun for abrasion and leaks before each shift.
- Have the burner and heating coil serviced and descaled on a schedule; soot and scale both reduce heat transfer and raise fuel use.
- Use only the fuel types approved by Kärcher for the burner.
Use in Oman and GCC conditions
Workshops in Muscat, Sohar, Duqm and the interior oil and gas areas deal with heavy fine sand bound into oil and grease, which cold water cannot shift efficiently. A hot water unit of this class suits plant hire yards, contractor fleets, port equipment, drilling and process skids and municipal vehicle depots. High ambient temperatures in summer mean the machine should stand in shade with free air flow around the motor and burner, and fuel should be stored away from direct sun. Weighing 206 kg with accessories and measuring 1330 x 750 x 1060 mm, it is a wheeled site machine, so plan access ramps and a level standing area.
