John Crane seal types listed here

The two listed seals represent two ways of fitting a seal. The Type 1 is a component seal: an elastomer bellows head that grips the shaft, running against a separate stationary seat, and assembled into the pump piece by piece. The Type 5610 is a single cartridge seal of the O-ring pusher type, delivered as one preassembled unit with sleeve and gland plate that slides over the shaft and bolts to the seal chamber. Cartridge seals take the setting measurements out of the fitter’s hands.

Ordering John Crane seals: what we need

A seal is defined by more than its type. Send the seal type, shaft or sleeve diameter, the material code for faces, elastomers and metal parts, and any drawing or part number from the old seal or its box. Add pump make and model, liquid, temperature, pressure and speed. Refineries and water plants in the GCC usually also quote the flush plan, which we pass on with the inquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I identify a John Crane seal from the pump or the old seal?
Look for the type number and size marked on the seal head or on the box label, and for a seal drawing or part number in the pump documents. If nothing is legible, measure the shaft diameter, the seat outside diameter and thickness, and the working length, and send photos of all parts with the pump model.
What is the difference between a Type 1 and a Type 5610 seal?
The Type 1 is an elastomer bellows component seal fitted directly on the shaft with a separate seat in the pump. The Type 5610 is an O-ring pusher cartridge seal supplied as one preassembled unit, which John Crane lists for ANSI, ISO and DIN seal chambers. They are not direct substitutes: changing from one to the other depends on the seal chamber dimensions of the pump.
Why do you ask for the material code as well as the seal type?
Because the same seal type is made in many material combinations. Face materials, the elastomer and the metal parts are chosen for the liquid and temperature. A seal with the right dimensions but the wrong elastomer can fail early in hydrocarbons or hot water, so the full code or the service conditions are needed.
Which company owns John Crane?
John Crane is part of Smiths Group plc and is its largest business. It began in 1917 in Chicago as Crane Packing Co., founded by John Crane and Frank Payne, and took the John Crane name in 1987.
Is Seven Star LLC a distributor of John Crane?
No. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier and is not a distributor or agent of John Crane. We source John Crane mechanical seals through commercial channels, check the model or order code against the manufacturer's documentation before ordering, and provide the manufacturer's datasheet and the certificates the manufacturer issues with the order on request.
