GCE MULTISTAGE S2+ Two-Stage Cylinder Regulator

Description

A two-stage regulator for steady delivery pressure

The GCE MULTISTAGE S2+ is a heavy-duty double-stage cylinder regulator for applications where the delivery pressure must stay constant as the cylinder empties. GCE names shielding-gas arc welding, CNC oxy-fuel cutting and laboratory use as typical duties. The first stage reduces the inlet pressure by more than 90 percent, and a large second-stage diaphragm then holds the delivery pressure accurately.

The regulator is built to EN ISO 2503 and EN ISO 7291. Because the relief valve port can be piped away, it also meets the stricter requirements of EN ISO 7291 for manifold use.

When to choose a two-stage regulator

A single-stage regulator lets the delivery pressure rise slightly as the cylinder pressure falls, which is why precision work such as machine cutting, sampling or analytical supply often uses a two-stage design. The MULTISTAGE S2+ keeps the second-stage setting steady across the cylinder pressure range, so the operator spends less time retrimming and the gas flow to a cutting machine or analyser stays predictable. The maximum outlet pressure is locked and the non-detachable control knob cannot be lost on a busy bench. For routine hand cutting and welding the more economical GCE UNICONTROL single-stage regulator is usually sufficient.

Check that the gas, thread (G 5/8 in, G 5/8 LH for hydrogen and acetylene, BS13 for nitrous oxide, 0.860 x 14 TPI for CO2) and delivery pressure match your cylinders. The datasheet notes that CO2 regulators need a heater above 40 l/min. Pipe the relief port to a safe location where required by site rules, and read both 50 mm dual-scale gauges against the class 2.5 percent accuracy stated by GCE when setting critical flows.

How the GCE MULTISTAGE S2+ works

A cylinder holds gas at high pressure, and the pressure falls as the cylinder empties. A single-stage regulator then lets the delivery pressure creep upward. The MULTISTAGE S2+ divides the work into two stages. The first stage cuts the inlet pressure by more than 90 percent to a stable intermediate value, using a 40 mm stainless steel diaphragm. The second stage uses a large 82 mm EPDM diaphragm to set the final delivery pressure. Each stage has its own safety valve. The result is a steady outlet pressure from a full cylinder to an almost empty one.

Where the MULTISTAGE S2+ is used

  • Shielding-gas arc welding
  • CNC oxy-fuel cutting
  • Laboratory gas supply
  • Manifolds, where the relief valve port can be piped away
  • Work with oxygen, acetylene, inert gas, hydrogen, nitrous oxide, CO2 and helium

Selection checklist for the MULTISTAGE S2+

  • Gas, since each gas has its own version, thread and materials
  • Inlet pressure of the cylinder, for example 300 bar
  • Outlet pressure range needed, from 1.5 to 10 bar in the listed versions
  • Flow in cubic metres per hour
  • Inlet thread, such as G 5/8 in, G 5/8 LH or BS
  • Bottom entry or side entry
  • Standard compliance, EN ISO 2503 and EN ISO 7291

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

Use the regulator only with the gas marked on it and keep oxygen versions free from oil and grease. Check the seals and the thread before fitting. Open the cylinder valve slowly and with the handwheel released. Leak test the connections with a suitable leak detection fluid. Close the cylinder valve at the end of work and release the pressure from the line. Inspect the regulator and gauges at intervals, and do not tamper with the safety valves, which are not adjustable.

Requesting a quotation for the GCE MULTISTAGE S2+

Please send the gas, the inlet and outlet pressures, the flow and the inlet thread. Seven Star LLC serves industrial customers in Oman and the GCC and replies with a quotation based on the information provided.

MULTISTAGE S2+ construction

The body is forged brass, chemically stabilised and painted. The second-stage bonnet is die-cast zinc alloy, and the handwheel is PA with a captive adjusting screw.

MULTISTAGE S2+ gauges

The 50 mm bulkhead gauges have dual scales and an accuracy of class 2.5 percent. They show cylinder content and delivery pressure.

MULTISTAGE S2+ pressure limit

An adjustable limit of maximum delivery pressure prevents the user from setting a pressure above the value set for the job.

MULTISTAGE S2+ listed versions

The list includes oxygen at 4 and 10 bar, acetylene at 1.5 bar, inert gas at 2, 4 and 10 bar, hydrogen at 4 and 10 bar and nitrous oxide at 10 bar.

Ordering GCE torches and regulators: what we need

Give the GCE article number, or the product range with length, head angle and connection threads. State the fuel gas, acetylene or propane, because the nozzle type depends on it, together with the plate thickness you cut, the gas and outlet pressure for regulators, and the safety devices required on site.
