Hanna HI98703 Portable Turbidity Meter, EPA Compliant

Description

A portable nephelometric turbidimeter for drinking water and wastewater

The HI98703 is a high-accuracy portable turbidimeter that, according to Hanna, meets and exceeds the requirements of USEPA Method 180.1 for wastewater and Standard Method 2130 B for drinking water. It measures turbidity from 0.00 to 1000 NTU in three automatically selected ranges, with 0.01 NTU resolution below 10 NTU, and has an EPA-compliance reading mode that rounds the result to meet reporting requirements.

The optical system uses a tungsten filament lamp with a scattered-light detector at 90 degrees and a transmitted-light detector. Ratioing the two signals gives long-term stability, minimises stray light and colour interference, and compensates for lamp intensity drift, so frequent recalibration is not needed. Hanna rates stray light at below 0.02 NTU.

Calibration, traceability and field data handling

Calibration can be performed at any time in one, two or three points against 15, 100 and 750 NTU standards, using the supplied or user-prepared solutions. Complete GLP functions keep the last calibration points, time and date available at a single touch. The user can pick normal, continuous or signal-averaging measurement, depending on the sample and the accuracy needed.

The meter is described as splash proof and arrives in a rigid carrying case. One battery set lasts at least 1500 measurements, and the display shows battery percentage and a low-battery warning. Hanna describes its Tag Identification System as a way to link measurements to sampling points for scientific and industrial work or for safety audits, and up to 200 measurements can be stored for download over RS232 or USB.

Choosing this meter and what ships with it

The HI98703 is a fit for treatment plants, distribution-network checks, filter-performance monitoring, raw-water intakes and effluent compliance work, where a portable turbidimeter follows the operator around the site. For lab-bench use with free and total chlorine in the same instrument, Hanna offers the HI83414 benchtop meter; for chlorine only, the HI97711 photometer.

Confirm the range your procedure needs, that NTU is the reporting unit required, and that the cuvette supply and standards are planned. Per the manual, the kit includes five sample cuvettes with caps, calibration cuvettes (HI98703-11), silicone oil for wiping the cuvettes, tissue, five tag holders with tags, four batteries, an AC adapter, instruction manual, quality certificate and a rigid carrying case.

How the Hanna HI98703 works

The HI98703 measures how cloudy a water sample is. A tungsten lamp sends a beam through a glass cuvette that holds the sample. Particles in the water scatter part of the light. A detector placed at 90 degrees reads the scattered light, and a second detector reads the light that passes straight through. The meter divides the two signals, so changes in lamp brightness or in water colour affect the result less. The result is shown in NTU, a standard unit of turbidity.

Where the Hanna HI98703 is used

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the HI98703

Place the meter on a level surface away from strong light. Calibrate with the standards before use, using one, two or three points. Fill the cuvette with a clean, bubble-free sample, wipe the glass dry and insert it in the same direction each time. Replace scratched cuvettes and keep the optics free of dust.

About brand

Hanna Instruments is a manufacturer of analytical instruments for pH, ORP, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, chlorine and titration, founded in 1978 by Oscar and Anna Nardo. Its portable meters, benchtop meters, photometers and electrodes are designed to give laboratory-style results in plant and field conditions.

Water quality instruments

Waterproof portable meters such as the HI98190, HI98192, HI98193 and HI9829 cover pH, EC, dissolved oxygen and multiparameter logging, while photometers and turbidimeters address chlorine and turbidity checks in drinking water, wastewater, boilers, cooling circuits and process lines. Features such as CAL Check validation cuvettes, GLP calibration recall and on-board data logging are described in each Hanna manual.
