Metrel MI 3121 SMARTEC Insulation and Continuity Tester

Description

A handheld insulation and continuity tester with a PASS/FAIL verdict

The Metrel MI 3121 SMARTEC is a dedicated insulation and continuity tester for the verification, maintenance and periodic testing of electrical installations. It measures insulation resistance at 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1000 V DC over a range of up to 30 GOhm, runs continuity tests at 200 mA or 7 mA with automatic polarity reversal, and measures voltage and frequency.

Metrel designed it for use on site: a very large LCD with bargraph and backlight, bright green and red indicators that give an immediate PASS or FAIL against preprogrammed limits, a magnetic holder for hands-free operation, a built-in battery charger and a robust, ergonomic housing. It is suited to testing on CAT IV installations, such as the distribution side of installations and industrial plants. Test results are stored in a two-level memory structure, 1900 measurements in total, and can be downloaded through USB or RS232 with the EuroLink PRO PC software.

Typical jobs and what is in the box

Metrel lists PE conductors and main and supplementary PE connections, troubleshooting of connectivity and polarity, insulation resistance, observation of insulation trends, and insulation of control, signal and telecom wiring at 50 and 100 V among the applications. For general installation work the 1000 V range covers the usual low-voltage test, and the 30 GOhm upper limit leaves headroom for dry, healthy cable.

The standard set contains the instrument, a soft hand strap, a universal 3 x 1.5 m test cable, two test tips and two alligator clips (black and red), a power adapter with six NiMH AA batteries, an instruction manual and a short manual, the product verification data and the handbook Guide for testing and verification of low voltage installations on CD. Optional accessories include 4 m and 20 m test leads (A 1154, A 1153), a magnetic contact probe (A 1198), tip commanders (A 1244, A 1270), a fast charger (A 1160), carrying bags and the EuroLink PRO or PRO Plus PC software packages.

What to confirm before ordering

Confirm the highest insulation test voltage your procedure calls for: 1000 V is the maximum on this model, so equipment tested at 2.5 kV or 5 kV needs a different instrument. Decide whether you need the PC software package and cable, longer leads, a magnetic probe or a larger carrying bag, and whether the set must include a manufacturer certificate. Metrel notes that photographs may differ slightly from delivered instruments and that specifications can change without notice.

Documents and quotation

Ordering Metrel instruments: what we need

Give the complete model name and the set you want, because Metrel sells most instruments as standard, Euro or advanced sets with different leads, clamps and software licences. List the accessories separately (longer leads, current clamps, adapters), and state the standard your testing must follow. If you are unsure of the model, describe the installation, the test voltage and the measurements required.
