DeFelsko PosiTector 200 Ultrasonic Coating Thickness Gage

Description

Ultrasonic coating thickness on concrete, wood, plastic and composites

The DeFelsko PosiTector 200 measures coating thickness ultrasonically, so it works where magnetic and eddy current gages cannot: polymer coatings on wood and plastic, coatings on concrete and fiberglass, and thick soft coatings such as polyurea. The technique is non-destructive and the datasheet states conformity with ISO 2808 and ISO 19397 and ASTM D6132. Standard models measure the total thickness of a coating system. Advanced models can also report up to three individual layer thicknesses in a multi-layer system and show a graphics mode in which each layer interface appears as a peak.

Technical specifications

Probe Typical application Measurement range Accuracy and minimum layer
Probe 200B Polymer coatings on wood, plastic and similar substrates 13-1,000 microns (0.5-40 mils) +/-(2 microns + 3% of reading); minimum layer 13 microns (0.5 mil)
Probe 200C Coatings on concrete, fiberglass and similar substrates 50-3,800 microns (2-150 mils) +/-(2 microns + 3% of reading); minimum layer 50 microns (2 mils)
Probe 200D Thick, soft coatings such as polyurea, asphaltic neoprene and very thick polymers 50-7,600 microns (2-300 mils); polyurea 50-5,000 microns (2-200 mils) +/-(20 microns + 3% of reading); minimum layer 500 microns (20 mils)

The gage body is 127 x 66 x 25.4 mm (5 x 2.6 x 1 in.) and weighs 137 g without batteries. It has a 2.8 in. colour touchscreen and an IP65-rated enclosure. The gage is supplied with ultrasonic gel, precision plastic shims, rubber holster, wrist strap, 3 AAA batteries, instructions, lens shield, carrying case, a long-form Certificate of Calibration traceable to NIST or PTB, USB cable, PosiSoft software and a two-year warranty on body and probe.

Standard and Advanced features

Standard models store 1,000 readings per probe. Advanced models store 250,000 readings in up to 1,000 batches and sub-batches, add live graphing, a touchscreen keyboard, WiFi synchronisation with PosiSoft.net and Bluetooth 4.0 for the PosiTector app. All models offer a statistics display, Max Thick mode, which shows the deepest ultrasonic echo so that unwanted surface echoes can be ignored without adjusting the low range, and the PosiSoft USB drive function that lets stored readings be read from any computer without software. The manufacturer lists complete gages for each probe in Standard and Advanced versions, and probe-only models for owners of an existing PosiTector body. Range limits apply to polymer-based coatings only. Ultrasonic readings need a film of couplant between probe and coating, and the ultrasonic gel supplied with the gage is intended for this.

Selection and ordering

Select the probe from the coating and substrate: 200B for thin polymer films on wood or plastic, 200C for typical coatings on concrete or glass-fibre laminate, and 200D for thick soft linings. Check that the substrate transmits sound well enough for the coating interface to return an echo, and that the expected layer thickness is above the probe minimum layer. If the same inspector also measures coatings on steel, the PosiTector body also accepts the PosiTector 6000 probes, which is described on the

page; see all specialty thickness gauges.

How the DeFelsko PosiTector 200 works

The PosiTector 200 measures a coating with sound. The probe sends a short ultrasonic pulse into the coating through a layer of gel. Part of the pulse bounces back from the top of the coating and part from the boundary with the material underneath. The gage times the delay between these echoes and calculates the thickness from the speed of sound in the coating. Because no magnetism or electric current is needed, the method works on wood, plastic, concrete and fiberglass as well as metal.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the PosiTector 200

Insert the batteries and attach the probe. Calibrate the gage on a known thickness, using the plastic shims supplied. Put a drop of gel on the surface, press the probe flat and read the value. Wipe the gel off after use, and keep the probe face clean and free of scratches.

About brand

DeFelsko is a US maker of handheld coating inspection instruments, founded in 1965 and based in Ogdensburg, New York. Its PosiTector and PosiTest instruments measure coating thickness, surface profile, environmental conditions, adhesion and salt contamination.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list DeFelsko instruments for coating inspectors and painting contractors in Oman and the GCC.

DeFelsko product series

PosiTector gauges share one body with interchangeable probes: the PosiTector 6000 coating thickness gage for metal substrates, the PosiTector 200 ultrasonic coating thickness gage for non-metal substrates, the PosiTector UTG ultrasonic wall thickness gage, the PosiTector SPG surface profile gage, the PosiTector RTR H replica tape reader, the PosiTector DPM dew point meter and the PosiTector SST soluble salt tester.

PosiTest instruments include the PosiTest AT-A automatic pull-off adhesion tester and the PosiTest HHD high voltage holiday detector.

Magnetic probes measure coatings on steel, eddy current probes measure coatings on non-ferrous metals, and the ultrasonic PosiTector 200 measures coatings on concrete, wood and plastics. All PosiTector probes plug into one gauge body, so an inspector can carry one instrument with several probes.

Where DeFelsko instruments are used

Surface preparation and coating inspection of pipelines, tanks, structural steel, ships and concrete, to standards such as ISO 8501, ISO 2808, ASTM D4417 and SSPC-PA 2.
