Telwin Superior Plasma 100 Inverter Plasma Cutter

Description

100 A air plasma cutter for 40 mm maximum thickness

The Telwin Superior Plasma 100 (code 816173) is a three-phase inverter plasma cutting system that uses compressed air as plasma gas and strikes its pilot arc by contact. Telwin specifies it for fast, low-distortion cutting, grid (expanded metal) cutting and gouging of all conductive metals, including steel, stainless steel, galvanised steel, aluminium, copper and brass. Maximum cutting thickness is 40 mm, and the unit can be interfaced with automated cutting systems through a CNC connecting cable. Code 816173 is supplied with a 6 m PV 105 plasma torch.

Controls, protections and automation interface

A digital panel shows cutting current and mode and is designed to be read and adjusted easily in the workshop. Telwin highlights the stability of the cutting current, which helps keep kerf width consistent along a cut. The machine is protected against overheating, over- and undervoltage, overcurrent, torch short circuit, phase failure and insufficient air pressure, and it accepts a remote control.

For mechanised cutting, the CNC connecting cable 10 m (804976) links the power source to a cutting table or portable gantry, and the PXA plasma torch 12 m (802955) is offered as an option. The MMS-10 moisture and mixture stop filter (804340, cartridges 804343) removes oil and water from shop air before it reaches the torch, which extends consumable life.

Choosing the right size

Air supply is the most common limit on plasma performance: the compressor must deliver 240 l/min at 4-5 bar continuously at the machine inlet. With 65 A available at 100% duty cycle, the 100 suits continuous production cutting of medium plate, with 40 mm as the stated maximum. The family also includes Superior Plasma 70 and Superior Plasma 160, and for lighter portable work the

is a smaller option.

Grid cutting keeps the pilot arc alive when the torch passes over gaps, so expanded metal, grating and perforated sheet can be cut without re-striking. In gouging, the arc is angled to remove weld defects or prepare a back-gouge before welding the second side, as an alternative to carbon arc gouging without the copper-coated carbons and the associated fume. Consumables such as electrodes, nozzles and swirl rings should be ordered with the machine and matched to the cutting current in use.

Documents and quotation

The attached Telwin instruction manual (955175, multilingual including English) covers installation, air connection, operation and consumables. For a quotation, state manual or CNC use, torch length, supply voltage and whether an air filter and trolley are needed. More cutters are listed under plasma cutting systems.

How the Superior Plasma 100 works

An air plasma cutter forces compressed air through a narrow copper nozzle while a DC arc burns between a tungsten-free hafnium-insert electrode and the workpiece. The constricted arc ionises the air into a plasma jet hot enough to melt the metal locally, and the high-velocity gas blows the molten material out of the kerf. On the Superior Plasma 100 the pilot arc is struck by contact: the electrode and nozzle touch, then separate as air pressure builds, which avoids high-frequency ignition and the electrical interference it can cause to nearby electronics and CNC controllers. Once the arc transfers to the plate, the inverter regulates the cutting current between 30 and 100 A.

Because the arc only needs an electrically conductive workpiece, the same machine cuts carbon steel, stainless steel, galvanised sheet, aluminium, copper and brass without changing gas. Quality depends on matching current to thickness, keeping a constant stand-off and travel speed, and using dry, oil-free air.

Practical operating guidance

  • Air quality: moisture and oil are the main cause of short electrode and nozzle life. Fit a dryer or the MMS-10 filter and drain the compressor receiver daily.
  • Pressure: set 4–5 bar at the machine inlet with air flowing, not at the compressor; long, narrow hoses cause pressure drop.
  • Current selection: use the lowest current that gives a clean, dross-free cut at a reasonable speed; running high current on thin sheet widens the kerf and increases bevel.
  • Travel speed: too slow produces heavy bottom dross; too fast causes the arc to lag and leaves top spatter or incomplete severance.
  • Consumables: replace electrode and nozzle as a pair and check the swirl ring for cracks; a worn electrode pit deeper than the manufacturer’s limit should not be used.
  • Power supply: the unit draws up to 20.8 A from a three-phase supply and is protected against phase failure; use the stated 16 A fuse rating and a correctly sized extension if needed.

Typical applications in Oman & the GCC

In Oman and the wider GCC the Superior Plasma 100 suits steel fabrication shops, structural and tank fabricators, shipyards and maintenance workshops serving oil & gas, power and desalination plants. Typical jobs include cutting base plates, gussets and flanges from medium plate, trimming stainless sheet for food and water equipment, cutting expanded-metal walkways and grating with the grid-cutting mode, and back-gouging welds during repair. The CNC interface makes it a practical power source for small cutting tables used by local fabricators. In hot, humid coastal sites, good air drying and keeping the IP23 enclosure free of dust and conductive debris are particularly important for reliability.

Superior Plasma 100 compared with Telwin alternatives

Within the Telwin Superior range, the Superior Plasma 70 is the lighter choice for thinner plate, while the Superior Plasma 160 provides higher current for heavier sections. The Superior Plasma 100 sits between them: 40 mm maximum cut, 65 A at 100% duty cycle and a 13.5 kW maximum input power, which makes it a balanced option for workshops that cut 6–25 mm plate regularly and occasionally need more.
