Overview

The NORD IE5+ synchronous motor is a latest-generation permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with efficiency beyond the IE5 class defined in IEC 60034-30-2. NORD supplies it from 0.35 to 11 kW in frame sizes 71, 90 and 112. The motor reaches its high efficiency over a wide torque range, so it remains economical in partial-load operation where conventional induction motors lose efficiency. Its compact design delivers high power density in less installation space, and it integrates fully with NORD gear units and drive electronics.

Operating Principle

In a permanent magnet synchronous motor, magnets in the rotor create the rotor field, so no current is needed to magnetise the rotor and the rotor losses of an asynchronous machine are largely eliminated. The rotor turns exactly in step with the rotating field produced by the stator, which means speed stays almost constant regardless of load and there is no slip. Because a PMSM must be supplied from a frequency inverter, the NORD IE5+ motor is always operated with a drive such as NORDAC FLEX, NORDAC ON or NORDAC PRO, which also provides precise speed and torque control.

The NORD IE5+ motors are 8-pole designs with a rated speed of 2,100 rpm for non-ventilated versions and 2,400 rpm for fan-cooled versions, and they deliver constant torque over a speed range from 0 to 2,400 rpm. This wide constant-torque band allows one motor and gear ratio to cover several speeds, so NORD notes that drive variants can be reduced. A permanently available holding torque of 0.60 to 0.90 times rated torque, depending on size, supports positioning tasks.

Engineering Design of the NORD IE5+ Motor

The NORD IE5+ range is built in two cooling types according to EN 60034-6. Fan-cooled TEFC versions (IC411) are available in sizes 71, 90 and 112, and smooth non-ventilated TENV versions (IC410) in sizes 71 and 90. The fanless TENV housing has no cooling fins to trap dirt and is particularly easy to clean, and it can be combined with the NXD tupH sealed surface conversion and IP69K protection for hygienic and washdown areas. A square terminal box with three metric cable entries and an 8-terminal board can be positioned freely.

Windings use insulation class 130 (B), lifetime-lubricated rolling bearings are fitted, and thermal protection with PTC thermistors is standard. Options include IP66, internal corrosion protection, a holding brake with or without hand release, motor connectors, magnetic incremental encoders, absolute encoders and the NXD tupH surface finish. Mounting variants include IEC B14 and B5 flanges, NEMA C-face flanges and direct attachment to all NORD gear units, and the motors comply with IEC 60034 standards and carry CE, UKCA, UL, CSA and CCC marks.
