SEL-411L Advanced Line Differential Protection Relay
Description
Overview
The SEL-411L Advanced Line Differential Protection, Automation, and Control System is an SEL-400 series relay from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories for transmission lines and high-voltage cables. It combines high-speed line current differential (87L) protection with full distance and directional protection, reclosing, synchronism check and complete bay control. A double-ended traveling-wave fault locator and multiterminal impedance-based fault location help utilities find and repair line faults quickly. The data sheet covers the SEL-411L-0, -1, -A and -B model families, which differ in the functions and applications they support.
Seven Star LLC supplies the SEL-411L to transmission utilities, power producers and large industrial networks in Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. It is typically specified for 132 kV and higher overhead lines, interconnector cables and short lines between substations where distance protection alone cannot give the required speed and selectivity.
Line Differential Protection Principle
Line current differential protection compares current phasors measured at each end of the protected line. The SEL-411L exchanges current data with relays at as many as three terminals over serial channels or four terminals over Ethernet, and supports three-pole or single-pole tripping. Phase-segregated (87LP), negative-sequence (87LQ) and zero-sequence (87LG) differential elements use patented generalized alpha plane comparators, which plot the ratio of remote to local current and trip when the ratio leaves the restraint region. Combined with overcurrent supervision, external fault detection, disturbance detection and optional charging current compensation, this gives high sensitivity for internal faults and strong security for external faults.
Several features adapt the scheme to real networks. Charging current compensation subtracts calculated line charging current, which improves sensitivity on long extra-high-voltage lines and cables. The external fault detector secures the 87L elements against CT errors when through current rises without a matching change in differential current, or when dc offset appears during line reactor or transformer energization. In-line power transformers can be included in the zone with vector group and ratio compensation and harmonic blocking or restraint, and dual CT inputs support breaker-and-a-half and ring-bus layouts.
Engineering Design of the SEL-411L
The 87L channels can run over direct point-to-point fiber, IEEE C37.94 multiplexed fiber, EIA-422 or G.703 links, and 87L over Ethernet is also available. Synchronization can be channel-based for symmetrical channels or based on external time sources for Ethernet or asymmetrical channels, with fallback logic if the time source is lost or degraded. Channel monitoring records round-trip delay, lost packets and channel alarms, so engineers can see communication health alongside protection status.
Behind the differential function is complete backup protection: as many as five zones of phase and ground distance with mho or quadrilateral characteristics, directional overcurrent, power swing blocking and out-of-step tripping. Patented CCVT transient overreach logic secures Zone 1, and Best Choice Ground Directional Element logic simplifies directional settings. Distance elements can work in POTT, DCB and DCUB communications-assisted schemes. The relay is offered for horizontal or vertical rack or panel mounting in chassis sizes from 4U to 7U, with more I/O boards on the larger sizes.
Key Features
Transmission protection engineers specify the SEL-411L for these capabilities:
- Line current differential protection for two-, three- or four-terminal lines with generalized alpha plane phase, negative- and zero-sequence elements.
- Line charging current compensation for long lines and cables, with fallback logic during loss of potential.
- Full distance protection with five zones, mho and quadrilateral characteristics and communications-assisted tripping schemes.
- Single-pole or three-pole tripping and reclosing of one or two breakers with synchronism and voltage checks.
- Double-ended traveling-wave fault location on two-terminal lines, using a dedicated converter sampling at 1.5625 MHz.
- Optional broken-conductor detection over the line length, including tapped and hybrid lines.
- Stub bus protection with a true restrained differential function for dual-breaker terminals.
- IEC 61850 Edition 2.1 with PRP or HSR redundancy, IEEE 1588 PTP timing and digitally signed firmware upgrades.
Automation and Communications
An optional Ethernet card gives access to all relay functions through IEC 61850 MMS and GOOSE, DNP3 LAN/WAN and FTP, while serial ports support SEL protocols, MIRRORED BITS and DNP3. Synchrophasor data are available in IEEE C37.118 format. Expanded SELOGIC control equations, local and remote control points and breaker and battery monitoring let the SEL-411L act as the bay controller as well as the main protection, reducing separate bay control units in a substation automation system.
Industrial Applications
In Oman, the SEL-411L fits 132 kV and 220 kV transmission circuits, underground cable links into city substations in Muscat, interconnections to large solar and gas-fired plants and grid connections for industrial estates in Sohar, Duqm and Salalah. Where lines combine overhead and cable sections, traveling-wave and multiterminal fault location shortens patrol time over desert terrain. The –40 to +85 °C operating temperature range gives margin in relay rooms exposed to high summer temperatures.
Oil and gas operators with long internal overhead lines between gathering stations and processing plants can also use the SEL-411L where fiber is available along the route. Seven Star LLC can assist with model selection between the SEL-411L-0, -1, -A and -B versions, chassis size, 87L channel interface and I/O count, and supply matching SEL relays for transformer and feeder bays at each end of the line.
Related SEL relays include the SEL-787 transformer protection relay and SEL-751 feeder protection relay.

How to Order
For an SEL-411L proposal, send Seven Star LLC the line voltage and length, number of terminals, CT and VT ratings, 87L channel type, tripping mode, chassis and mounting preference and auxiliary supply. Our Muscat engineers will confirm the model and options, advise on delivery to substations in Oman and the GCC and provide the SEL-411L data sheet for submittal. About brand
Protection engineers know Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories simply as SEL. The company has made digital protective relays in Pullman, USA, since 1982, and its relays guard feeders, motors, transformers and generators in utilities and industrial plants. Seven Star LLC lists the SEL-751 feeder relay, SEL-710-5 motor relay and SEL-787 transformer relay, and sources SEL relays for electrical teams in Oman and the GCC.
SEL-700 series relays on the site
The SEL-751 protects radial and looped distribution feeders with overcurrent, directional, voltage and frequency elements, autoreclosing and breaker failure logic. It can be ordered with arc-flash detection inputs and a touchscreen. Protocol options include IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus and EtherNet/IP. The SEL-710-5 covers motor protection and the SEL-787 transformer differential protection in the same hardware family.
Ordering SEL relays: what we need
An SEL relay is defined by its full part number, a long string that fixes the power supply voltage, CT secondary rating (1 A or 5 A), I/O cards in each slot, communication ports, protocols and display. Send that string from the nameplate or from your specification. A model name alone is not enough.
