Pepperl+Fuchs KFD2-UT2-Ex2 Universal Temperature Converter

Overview

The Pepperl+Fuchs KFD2-UT2-Ex2 is a two-channel isolated barrier and universal temperature converter for hazardous area installations. It converts the signal of a resistance thermometer (RTD), thermocouple, potentiometer or voltage source in the field into a proportional 2-wire current output on the safe side, and can also be configured as a signal splitter with one input and two outputs. Each channel provides intrinsic safety to the field circuits, and the device is certified for installation in Zone 0/1/2 and Division 1/2 applications with SIL 2 capability per IEC/EN 61508 and IEC/EN 61511.

Engineering and Design

The KFD2-UT2-Ex2 accepts RTD types Pt10 to Pt1000 per EN 60751 (plus GOST equivalents), Cu10-100 and Ni100, thermocouple types B, E, J, K, N, R, S, T, L and TXK/TXKH/TXA with internal or external cold junction compensation, potentiometers from 0 to 20 kOhm, and voltage inputs from -100 to 100 mV. Each channel outputs 0-20 mA or 4-20 mA in sink or source mode with a fault signal that follows NAMUR NE43 (downscale 0 or 2 mA, upscale 21.5 mA). Transfer deviation after calibration is typically +/-0.1% of span for Pt100, and the device detects sensor breakage and short-circuit with line fault (LFD) monitoring.

The module is powered from a 24 V DC supply via screw terminals or the P+F Power Rail with a consumption of max 1.53 W per module, and is configured through a programming socket using PACTware. The compact B2 housing measures 20 x 119 x 115 mm (W x H x D) with a mass of approx. 130 g and mounts on a 35 mm DIN rail per EN 60715. Certification includes EU-type examination certificate CESI 04 ATEX 143 with marking II (1)G [Ex ia Ga] IIC, II (1)D [Ex ia Da] IIIC and I (M1) [Ex ia Ma] I, and the removable terminal block K-CJC-** is available for cold junction compensation reference junctions.
