Cisco Catalyst C9500-40X-E Lifecycle and Replacement Notes

Cisco announced end-of-life for the C9500-40X, C9500-24Q and C9500-12Q on 30 April 2023. For the C9500-40X-E the main milestones are: end of sale on 30 April 2024, last shipment on 30 July 2024, end of software maintenance releases on 30 April 2025, end of service contract renewal on 29 July 2028, and last date of support on 30 April 2029.

Cisco states that IOS XE 17.18 is the last supported software release for this hardware, so sites that keep the switch in service should plan their software baseline around that release train. The migration product Cisco lists for the 40-port 10G Network Essentials model is the C9500-48Y4C. In the part number, the -E suffix identifies the Network Essentials licence level.

Cisco Catalyst C9500-40X-E Installation Notes

The chassis has two power supply slots at the rear and accepts the 950 W AC unit (PWR-C4-950WAC-R) or the 950 W DC unit (PWR-C4-950WDC-R). The supplies are field-replaceable and hot-swappable. Cooling is by five FAN-T4-R modules with front-to-back airflow; the switch needs at least four working fans and tolerates one failed fan. Fan modules can be changed with the switch running, but have the replacement ready before removing the old one. The uplink slot takes either the C9500-NM-8X (eight 10G SFP+ ports) or the C9500-NM-2Q (two 40G QSFP+ ports).

About brand

Cisco, founded in 1984 in San Jose, California, makes the switches and routers that carry most plant and office networks. Its Catalyst 9500 series is the company's fixed switch line for the campus core and aggregation layer. Seven Star LLC lists the Cisco Catalyst C9500-40X-E with 40 ports of 10G SFP+ and sources Cisco switches for control-room and plant network projects in Oman and the GCC.

The Catalyst 9500 and the C9500-40X-E

Catalyst 9500 switches run Cisco IOS XE and support StackWise Virtual, which lets two switches operate as one logical core. The -E at the end of the product ID means the switch is ordered with the Network Essentials license; -A means Network Advantage. Cisco has announced end of sale for the C9500-40X, so new projects should check the current replacement model.
