Extech IR400 Mini IR Thermometer with Laser Pointer, 332 C

Description

IR400 is a compact Extech infrared thermometer for quick non-contact surface temperature checks. It reads from -20 to 332 C (-4 to 630 F) as stated in the datasheet, has a fixed 0.95 emissivity, an 8:1 field of view, a laser pointer for aiming, a backlit display and Max/Min hold. It is supplied with a 9 V battery and a carrying case.

A pocket thermometer for hot spots and heating checks

Pull and hold the trigger to start a measurement; the display shows the temperature, a flashing SCAN icon and the unit, and releasing the trigger holds the last reading for about ten seconds before the meter switches itself off. The laser pointer lights the measured spot and can be switched off with a button while scanning.

The meter is aimed at the surface rather than touched to it, so it suits motor housings, bearing caps, steam and hot-water pipes, switchgear connections and building envelope checks. The manual notes the meter automatically compensates for ambient temperature changes but may need up to 30 minutes to settle after extreme changes.

Features stated in the datasheet and manual

  • Backlit display for measurements at night or in low light.
  • Automatic data hold when the trigger is released, with Min/Max hold.
  • Fixed 0.95 emissivity, which the manual says suits about 90 percent of typical applications.
  • Class 2 laser pointer, below 1 mW, 630 to 670 nm; complete with 9 V battery and case.

Using the field of view and emissivity correctly

At an 8:1 ratio the spot is one inch across at eight inches, so the target must be at least as large as the spot size and measurements should be taken as close as practical. Because emissivity cannot be adjusted, shiny metal surfaces will read low unless they are covered with masking tape or flat black paint and allowed to reach the surface temperature, as the manual advises.

The datasheet states a top range of 332 C, while one manual accuracy table lists 343 C; the datasheet figure is used on this page. Confirm the range required for the application before ordering.

Operating notes from the manual

Clean frost, oil or grime from the surface first; measurements cannot be made through glass, and steam, dust or smoke can obscure readings. To find a hot spot, aim outside the area of interest and scan up and down across it. Never point the laser at anyone, and do not use it near explosive gases.

Replace the 9 V battery when the battery icon shows; the compartment is behind the panel around the trigger. Annual calibration is recommended by the manufacturer.

Typical uses in Gulf maintenance work

Datasheet suggestions include automotive checks, heating systems and finding insufficient insulation in buildings. General engineering note: in summer plant rooms, a quick scan of breaker and busbar joints, motor end bells and HVAC pipework with an IR thermometer helps spot warm connections early, though it does not replace thermal imaging or formal inspection.

Field use and calibration notes

Infrared thermometers are used in the region by maintenance teams to check motors, bearings, electrical panels, steam traps and air conditioning equipment. Remember that the 8:1 field of view means the spot grows with distance, so measure close enough for the target to fill the spot. Shiny metal surfaces read low with a fixed emissivity, so a strip of tape or paint on the surface gives a more reliable reading. Check the thermometer against a reference at regular intervals.

Keep the lens clean and store the thermometer away from heat and dust when it is not in use, so readings stay reliable.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature range does IR400 cover?

The datasheet gives -4 to 630 F (-20 to 332 C).

Can emissivity be changed?

No. Emissivity is fixed at 0.95, so reflective surfaces need tape or flat black paint.

What is the field of view?

8:1, meaning the spot diameter is one eighth of the distance to the target.

How is it powered?

By one 9 V battery, supplied with the meter along with a carrying case.
