KERN 440-47N Precision Balance 2000 g x 0.1 g
Description
Compact classic precision balance for everyday laboratory weighing
The KERN 440-47N is a strain-gauge precision balance with a maximum capacity of 2000 g and a readability of 0.1 g. A stainless steel weighing plate of 130 x 130 mm sits on a compact 165 x 230 x 80 mm housing, and a backlit LCD with 15 mm digits shows the result. KERN describes it as the classic balance in the laboratory and highlights its compact size, which is practical in small spaces.
The balance suits tasks where grams matter but milligrams do not: weighing reagent bulk, sample bags and filter media, batching pigments or additives, checking packaging weights and incoming goods in a quality department. A percentage function lets the user store a reference weight as 100 % and read deviations from it, which helps when checking filled bags or compounded materials against a target.
Key features from the datasheet
- Percentage determination: stores a given weight as 100 % and shows deviations.
- Counting function with 10,000 counting resolution and reference quantities 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50; averaging function for unstable conditions.
- Underfloor weighing with an optional hook (440-A01).
- Optional battery operation with a 9 V block (not included) for up to 20 h, with auto-off after 3 min to preserve the battery.
- Protective working cover supplied; RS-232 interface standard.
- Units include g, dwt, tl (Tw), tl (HK), ozt, mo, lb, oz, ffa and tol.

Installation and operation notes
Place the balance on a firm bench free from vibration and drafts, away from air-conditioning vents. Allow the 30 min warm-up, then adjust with a 2 kg M1 reference weight; KERN lists a 2 kg test weight 347-12 and a safety set 315-412-407. For mobile use fit a 9 V block, and use the AUTO-OFF function to save it. The permissible temperature range is 5 to 35 degrees C. The supplied protective working cover shields the balance in dusty rooms, and a stable reading appears within about 3 s, so batching many samples goes quickly.
Applications in GCC laboratories and plants
Typical uses are chemical stores and sample rooms at petrochemical sites, water treatment chemical dosing checks, cement and construction material testing, and QC benches in manufacturing. The 2 kg range is a convenient step above 0.01 g balances and below bench scales. Because the balance has an RS-232 port as standard, results can be logged to a PC or printed, which helps laboratories that keep batch records for audits. For recipes of several ingredients, the counting and percentage functions can be combined with manual tare, so the same bench balance covers formulation checks, packaging control and incoming inspection.
Accessories and related items
KERN lists the underfloor hook 440-A01, protective covers 440-450-002, RS-232 cable 572-926, converter AFH 13, thermal printer YKC-01, needle printer YKT-01, Bluetooth, Ethernet and WiFi adapters (YKI-02, YKI-10, YKI-11, YKI-12), anti-vibration plates YPS-04 and YPS-05 and SCD-4.0 software. See also our portable test and measurement instruments.
Use and calibration notes
Precision balances of this type are used in the region in quality control laboratories, schools and universities, workshops, food production and jewellery or gold trading, wherever everyday weighing to 0.1 g is needed. Place the balance on a stable, level table away from drafts, air conditioning outlets, direct sun and vibration, and level it before use. Allow it to warm up as described in the manual.
Check the balance regularly with a known test weight, and adjust it with an external weight as described in the manual when the location or temperature changes. Arrange calibration where results are used for trade or quality records. Where the balance is used for trade, confirm which approvals the local authority requires.
Keep a simple record of test-weight checks, so drift can be seen early and calibration arranged in good time.
