Sonatest Railscan 125+ Rail Flaw Detector

Description

A rail-specific flaw detector with fixed, repeatable settings

The Railscan 125+ is Sonatest’s portable flaw detector for railway track inspection. Sonatest names three uses: rail walking-stick inspection, manual defect sizing and rail bottom depth measurement. The instrument is built on the same sealed, impact-resistant enclosure as the Sitescan and Masterscan models, but its pulser, filters and gates are fixed for rail work so that every operator starts from the same configuration.

The product page highlights two narrowband amplifiers, up to three gates for a complete inspection, encoder-driven thickness auto-logging and what Sonatest calls the best signal-to-noise ratio in its class. For rail and metro projects in the Gulf, where track maintenance and new-build lines both need routine ultrasonic checks, a detector with locked parameters reduces set-up error.

How the three gates are arranged

Gate 1 triggers on positive signals, gate 2 on negative signals after a 0.6 s delay, and gate 3 on both polarities. Each gate has an expand function, and the sheet lists a live reference A-scan, a zoom function and a freeze that leaves all gates and measurements active. A fast response with peak capture displays an indication even if it appears for a single cycle of the 1 kHz PRF, according to the product page.

Because the PRF, rectification and damping are fixed, an operator sets only the gain, range, filter band and gate positions. The product page adds a factory option to reset parameters to default at start-up, which must be specified when ordering. The sheet also lists A-log and panel deletion after 24 hours, available only on the standard (NR) version.

Display, battery and ruggedness

The colour transflective VGA display offers adjustable brightness and nine palettes, including black-on-white emulation, and a full-screen mode enlarges the A-scan. The case is sealed to IP67, the pack lasts a typical 10.5 hours, and the unit is rated to -10 to 55 deg C in operation. Sonatest also states a worldwide service network.

Data management

UT-Lity software loads and stores files on a PC or a connected flaw detector, exports thickness logs to spreadsheets or asset-management software and updates firmware. Measurement results update ten times per second on screen.

Rail inspection projects in Oman and the GCC

Rail and metro networks in the Gulf combine new-build lines with freight corridors that run through hot, dusty desert sections. Routine ultrasonic checks focus on the rail head, web and foot, on welds made in the field and on areas around switches and crossings. Using an instrument whose pulser, filters and gates are fixed for rail work helps keep results consistent when several inspection teams, or several contractors, work on the same line.

For long walking-stick runs, plan the probe set, couplant supply and spare battery packs together with the instrument, and check that the operating temperature of the probes suits the rail surface temperature in summer.
