Additel ADT226 Multifunction Documenting Process Calibrator

Description

A handheld calibrator that covers pressure, temperature and electrical work in one case

The Additel ADT226 is a multifunction documenting process calibrator that sources, simulates and measures electrical signals, temperature sensors and pressure from a single 0.7 kg handheld. A technician checking a 4-20 mA transmitter, a thermocouple loop and a pressure switch on the same shift can do all three without swapping instruments. The datasheet describes a smartphone-like touchscreen, USB Type-C and Bluetooth communication, a built-in barometer and an IP67 enclosure with a 1 metre drop test.

The ADT226 sits below the ADT227 in Additel’s multifunction range. The ADT226 datasheet covers two versions, the standard unit and the intrinsically safe ADT226Ex, and the ordering table also lists a panel-mount ADT226P. The manual is shared with the ADT227, which adds HART communication, so check the model label before assuming a HART function.

What the datasheet highlights

  • Electrical accuracy of 0.015% of reading plus 0.005% of full scale, with true RMS voltage and a 300 V AC / DC high-voltage input on the non-Ex unit.
  • Dual-channel pressure module ports, with a high static differential pressure mode that reaches 0.002% FS using two sensors.
  • Built-in apps: leak test, safety valve test (10 readings per second to capture the release point), analog transmitter calibration, unit converter, thermal calculator and snapshots.
  • Wiring diagram guide, intelligent alarm messages and a self-test routine for troubleshooting in the field.
  • Removable Li-ion battery with up to 12 hours typical run time and Bluetooth range of 20 m unobstructed.

Choosing the right version and options

The model code is short. ADT226 is the standard calibrator, ADT226Ex the intrinsically safe version and ADT226P the panel-mount variant. The Ex version trades some features for safety: it offers 0 to 10.5 V voltage source, a fixed 50% duty cycle frequency output, no high-voltage input and a lower 22 V loop supply. Pressure measurement is always through a separate ADT161 or ADT161Ex digital module, so decide on the range and accuracy of those modules at the same time.

Check the temperature range too. Full specification is guaranteed between 10 and 30 C on the standard unit and between -10 and 50 C on the Ex unit, with a 10 minute warm-up before the specified performance is reached.

Working with it in the field

The manual’s safety section is short but strict: use only the correct measurement category probes and cables, never use the non-Ex version in an explosive, steam or dust environment, check the housing for damage before use, and charge the battery when the low-battery warning appears because readings can become abnormal. Charge only with the Additel adapter and battery pack. The battery can be charged outside the unit, which helps where spare packs are rotated on shift.

Short-circuit zeroing is provided for current and voltage channels, supported to 1% FS, and pressure channels can be zeroed when vented. For a leak test, connect the calibrator and the pressure device in a gas circuit and set the test time in the app. When the source is a HART transmitter circuit, remember that this model does not provide the HART communicator function of the ADT227.

Where it earns its place in Oman and the GCC

Instrument shops at refineries, gas plants and desalination sites use handheld calibrators for loop checks before shutdowns, while field technicians need something that survives dust, sun and the occasional drop. The IP67 case and sunlight-readable display suit open-air plant work, and the Ex version is aimed at oil and gas platforms, refineries and petrochemical plants according to Additel.
