Donaldson A 0035-1450 Activated Carbon Filter Element
Description
An activated carbon adsorption element with integrated particle stage, 35 to 1,450 m3/h
The Donaldson A 0035-1450 (Ultrac A) is an adsorption filter element that combines activated carbon with a microfibre depth filter. The carbon stage removes oil vapour, hydrocarbons and odours, and the depth stage retains particles, so one element does both jobs. The sheet states that with appropriate prepurification a residual oil content below 0.003 mg/m3 is achieved.
The elements are validated to ISO 12500-2 and sized for the compressed air quality classes of ISO 8573-1. Donaldson names final filtration for control and process air, breathing air applications and paint and lacquer finishing air as the main uses. Ten sizes run from type 0035 at 35 m3/h to type 1450 at 1,450 m3/h.

Sizes and pressure correction
- 0035: Flow m3/h at 7 bar g 35
- 0120: Flow m3/h at 7 bar g 120
- 0320: Flow m3/h at 7 bar g 320
- 0600: Flow m3/h at 7 bar g 600
- 1100: Flow m3/h at 7 bar g 1,100
- 1450: Flow m3/h at 7 bar g 1,450
The conversion factor runs from 0.25 at 1 bar g to 2.13 at 16 bar g. The sheet example sizes 350 m3/h at 9 bar g as a flow of 280 m3/h and selects type 0320. Differential pressure is shown for the element in its housing at 8 bar absolute.
Adsorption performance and use
The sheet grades the carbon on a scale from A (very good) to D (slight). Oil vapour, benzene, toluene, acetic acid, sulphuric acid, isopropyl ether, perfumes and citrus odours are graded A. Methanol, acetone, methyl acetate and chlorine are B, hydrogen sulphide, Freon and ammonia are C and ethane is D. Use these grades to judge whether the carbon suits your contaminant.
Each order is accompanied by a DIN EN 10204 2.2 compliance certificate with test report, per the sheet. The element sits inside a matching Donaldson housing, so check the housing type, the element size and the O-ring material when you order a replacement. The standard Viton O-rings are silicone free, which matters for paint and lacquer finishing air.

How the A 0035-1450 Activated Carbon Element Works
Donaldson describes its A series as compact activated carbon filter elements that remove oil vapour and odour in a two-stage process: activated carbon adsorption followed by depth particle filtration. Compressed air enters the bore of the element and flows outward. In the first stage, granular activated carbon captures oil vapour, hydrocarbons and odorous compounds on its internal pore surface. Adsorption is a surface effect, so the carbon works on molecules in the vapour phase rather than on liquid droplets. In the second stage, a binder-free borosilicate microfibre depth layer retains fine particles, including any carbon fines released from the first stage, so the air leaving the element is clean of both vapour and dust.
The A series belongs to Donaldson’s group of oil-free elements, which are designed to pair with dryers and adsorbers and give additional protection to critical downstream equipment. In the same brochure Donaldson lists the AK / AKP / P-AK activated carbon elements and the three-stage DF-T elements, which combine coalescing, carbon adsorption and particle filtration in one cartridge.
Selection & Ordering Guide for the A 0035-1450 Range
Match the element to the housing
The numeric part of the type indicates nominal flow in m³/h at 7 bar g, so an A 0320 element fits the same size housing as other 0320 elements of the Donaldson range. Donaldson’s DF filter housings are compact, modular housings for compressed air and gas with flow rates up to 1,450 m³/h (853 scfm), which matches the top of the A 0035-1450 range. When replacing an element, read the type plate on the housing and quote both the housing size and the element grade.
Correct for pressure
At pressures other than 7 bar g, divide the required flow by the pressure conversion factor before choosing the size. A low-pressure system needs a larger element, and a high-pressure system can use a smaller one.
Place it correctly in the treatment train
- Coarse or micron filtration (for example V, CF or M grades) to remove solid particles and bulk liquid.
- Submicron coalescing filtration (S, SMF or FF grades) to reduce aerosol oil below 0.01 mg/m³.
- A dryer, where dry air is required, because moisture reduces carbon capacity.
- The A element last, as the final stage for oil vapour and odour removal before the point of use.
Installation & Maintenance
- Install the housing vertically with the correct flow direction marked on the head, and allow clearance below for element removal.
- Depressurise the housing fully before opening it and check the O-rings for damage on every change.
- Do not operate the element above +60°C; keep inlet air within the recommended +10°C to +40°C for best adsorption.
- Activated carbon saturates without a large change in differential pressure, so plan changes by operating hours or by an oil vapour test, not only by a pressure gauge.
- Donaldson’s Econometer (mechanical) and Economizer (microprocessor) differential pressure monitors help time element changes on the particle stages upstream.
Typical Applications in Oman & the GCC
The A 0035-1450 range suits final filtration for instrument and control air in oil and gas facilities, process air in food, beverage and pharmaceutical plants, breathing air systems, and paint and lacquer finishing air in automotive and fabrication workshops. In the hot GCC climate, compressed air often leaves aftercoolers above 40°C, so cooling and drying ahead of the carbon element is essential for its service life.

Compressed air quality is set by ISO 8573-1 classes for particles, water and oil. A typical instrument air system uses a coarse filter and a fine coalescing filter before the dryer, an adsorption dryer for a low pressure dew point (for example -40 °C), and a dust filter after it. An activated carbon stage removes oil vapour where the air touches food or is breathed. Heatless dryers use some of the dry air to regenerate the desiccant, while heat-regenerated and zero-purge types save that air on larger systems.
Where Donaldson products are used
In Oman and the GCC, Donaldson filters and dryers are used for instrument and plant air in oil and gas, refining, power and desalination plants, for breathing air, in food and pharmaceutical production, on hydraulic systems and fuel storage, and in cement and bulk handling.
