The Swagelok SS-QC4-B-2PM is the body half of a QC4 instrumentation quick-connect, with a 1/8 in. male NPT end. Body, stem and how they couple
Quick-connects are sold in halves. A body, like this one, is the receptacle; a stem is the plug. Any QC4 stem fits any QC4 body. Stems come in single-end shutoff (SESO, no valve, open when uncoupled) and double-end shutoff (DESO, with a valve that closes when uncoupled) forms, while the body carries the housing, body sleeve and valve O-ring. Locking dogs hold the stem in a push-to-connect action, and the heavy-duty body sleeve shields the open end. The catalog notes that new-design and old-design stems and bodies interchange.
Spillage and air inclusion for QC4 DESO connections are 0.3 cm3 each at 70 F, which matters when the fluid is expensive or the system is sensitive to air.
Pressure and operating limits
Coupled, the QC4 series in 316 stainless steel with FKM O-rings is rated 3000 psig (206 bar) from about 10 F to 100 F, falling to 2300 psig at 200 F and 500 psig at 400 F. The 250 psig (17.2 bar) rating applies whenever the connector is uncoupled or being coupled or uncoupled at 70 F. Swagelok is the American maker of tube fittings and small-bore valves, best known for its two-ferrule compression tube fitting. Fred A. Lennon and Cullen B. Crawford founded it in Cleveland, Ohio, in July 1947 as Crawford Fitting Company to make that fitting. A Swagelok part number can be read directly. In SS-810-6, "SS" is 316 stainless steel, "810" means a 1/2 in. tube fitting (8 sixteenths of an inch, 10 series), and "-6" is a union. A suffix such as "-8" adds a 1/2 in. NPT end, and "M0" marks metric tube, as in SS-12M0-6 for 12 mm. Tube fittings must be made up the same way every time: finger-tight, then 1 1/4 turns for most sizes. A gap inspection gauge confirms the fitting has been pulled up.
