Brooks Instrument Sho-Rate 1250 and 1255 Glass Tube Flowmeter

Description

Low-flow glass tube meters made for panels and OEM equipment

The Sho-Rate 1250 and its longer sibling the 1255 are precision low-flow glass tube variable area flowmeters from Brooks Instrument for liquids and gases in laboratory, industrial and OEM equipment. The 1250 has a compact 65 mm scale and the 1255 an extended 150 mm scale. A rotating lens gives a 180 degree magnified view for panel mounting, which the datasheet says reduces reading errors.

Both meters use borosilicate glass tubes with a choice of aluminium or stainless steel end blocks, an optional inlet or outlet valve, and Buna or Viton O-rings. The EZ-CHANGE design allows tube assemblies to be swapped quickly, so a meter can be reconfigured or serviced with little downtime. Standard scales are direct reading or millimetre for air, nitrogen and water at reference conditions, with additional scales for oxygen, carbon dioxide, helium, argon and other gases.

Reading the Sho-Rate model code

The sample code in the datasheet reads 1250A D6011 A C S V V. The base code is 1250A (65 mm) or 1255A (150 mm), followed by a tube number from the capacity tables, a letter for the fluid (air, carbon dioxide, millimetre, nitrogen, oxygen, argon, water or hydrogen), a unit of measure (CCM, SCFH, GPH, LPM, ml/min, GPM or millimetre), the end-block material and connection (1/8 inch FNPT aluminium or stainless steel, or 1/4 inch FNPT stainless steel), a valve designation (none, standard inlet valve or outlet valve for vacuum or water service) and the O-ring (Buna for aluminium only, Viton for stainless steel only).

For low-flow glass tube meters with alarms, flow controllers or customised reference conditions, Brooks points to the Sho-Rate 135X product line instead.

What to confirm before ordering

Tell us the fluid, flow range and units, operating pressure and temperature relative to the reference conditions, connection size and thread, valve position, end-block material, and whether the meter will be panel mounted. Because the stated accuracy applies at reference conditions, process conditions that differ from 70 F and 14.7 psia should be mentioned so the scale can be matched. Glass tube meters should not be used with fluids that attack glass or at conditions beyond the stated limits.

About brand

Brooks Instrument makes mass flow controllers, flowmeters and pressure and vacuum instruments for gases and liquids. The industrial chemist Stephen A. Brooks started the business in 1946 as the Brooks Rotameter Company near Philadelphia, building variable area flowmeters. After many years as part of Emerson, Brooks was sold to American Industrial Partners at the end of 2007 and has been a division of Illinois Tool Works (ITW) since January 2012. It is headquartered in Hatfield, Pennsylvania.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Brooks Instrument thermal and Coriolis mass flow controllers and variable area flowmeters for buyers in Oman and the GCC. Instruments are matched from the model code and the gas, range and calibration data on the label.

Where Brooks instruments are used

Brooks mass flow controllers dose gases in analyser systems, catalyst and pilot plant testing, gas blending, burner and combustion control, fuel cell test stands and semiconductor tools. Variable area flowmeters are widely used on purge gas, seal flush, sample and chemical injection lines in oil and gas, refining and petrochemical plants, where a simple local indication without external power is preferred.

Ordering Brooks instruments: what we need

Send the full model code and serial number from the label. Mass flow controllers are calibrated for a specific gas and full-scale flow, so state the gas or gas mixture, flow range, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, process connection, seal material, signal (analog, RS-485, DeviceNet, EtherNet/IP or other) and any hazardous-area requirement. For variable area meters add the fluid, density, viscosity, flow range, connection size, materials and whether alarms or a 4-20 mA output are needed.
