Brooks Instrument 5800E Series Analog Mass Flow Controller
Description
Analog thermal mass flow control for general-purpose gas service
The 5800E Series covers Brooks Instrument elastomer-sealed analog thermal mass flow controllers and meters for general-purpose gas applications. The controllers are the 5850E, 5851E and 5853E and the meters are the 5860E, 5861E and 5863E. Brooks cites chemical and petrochemical research, laboratory, analytical, fuel cell and life science uses and stresses long-term sensor stability, a valve designed for minimal leak-by and calibration on primary standard systems traceable to international standards.
The design is modular and elastomer sealed, which the datasheet says allows factory or field service. Because the interface is a simple 0 to 5 volt signal on a 15-pin connector, the series suits systems that do not need a digital bus. For networked or digitally configured installations, Brooks offers the separate SLA5800 Series.

Selecting the right body size and connection
Pick the body by full-scale range: the 50 series for 0.003 to 30 slpm, the 51 series for 10 to 100 lpm and the 53 series for 100 to 1000 lpm. The datasheet notes that up to 200 lpm of hydrogen is possible, and 600 lpm with reduced accuracy. Process connections on the small bodies are 1/8, 1/4 and 3/8 inch compression, 1/4 inch VCO and VCR, with 1/2 inch VCO and VCR on the mid body. The large 5853E and 5863E offer female pipe thread, tube compression to 1 inch, VCO, VCR and ANSI 150 or 300 and DIN PN40 flanges from 1/2 inch up to 2 inch and DN15 to DN50.
What to confirm before ordering
Send us the gas and full-scale flow, the pressures on both sides of the controller, the valve action, the fitting or flange, and the exact signal range of the host system. Differential pressures outside the stated limits may be workable in some processes, but should be reviewed against the datasheet. If you are matching an existing nameplate, include the complete model number so the valve type and connection can be compared.
How the Brooks Instrument 5800E works
A small part of the gas flows through a heated sensor tube. The gas carries heat from one point to another, and the temperature difference shows the mass flow. The controller compares this value with the 0 to 5 volt setpoint. It then moves the valve until the flow matches the setpoint.

About brand
Brooks Instrument makes mass flow controllers, flowmeters and pressure and vacuum instruments for gases and liquids. The industrial chemist Stephen A. Brooks started the business in 1946 as the Brooks Rotameter Company near Philadelphia, building variable area flowmeters. After many years as part of Emerson, Brooks was sold to American Industrial Partners at the end of 2007 and has been a division of Illinois Tool Works (ITW) since January 2012. It is headquartered in Hatfield, Pennsylvania.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Brooks Instrument thermal and Coriolis mass flow controllers and variable area flowmeters for buyers in Oman and the GCC. Instruments are matched from the model code and the gas, range and calibration data on the label.

Where Brooks instruments are used
Brooks mass flow controllers dose gases in analyser systems, catalyst and pilot plant testing, gas blending, burner and combustion control, fuel cell test stands and semiconductor tools. Variable area flowmeters are widely used on purge gas, seal flush, sample and chemical injection lines in oil and gas, refining and petrochemical plants, where a simple local indication without external power is preferred.
Ordering Brooks instruments: what we need
Send the full model code and serial number from the label. Mass flow controllers are calibrated for a specific gas and full-scale flow, so state the gas or gas mixture, flow range, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, process connection, seal material, signal (analog, RS-485, DeviceNet, EtherNet/IP or other) and any hazardous-area requirement. For variable area meters add the fluid, density, viscosity, flow range, connection size, materials and whether alarms or a 4-20 mA output are needed.
