Brooks Instrument Quantim QMC Coriolis Mass Flow Controller

Description

Low-flow Coriolis control for liquids and gases in one compact unit

The QMC is the third-generation Quantim low-flow Coriolis mass flow meter and controller from Brooks Instrument for liquids and gases. It is compatible in fit, form and function with the second-generation QMB models, and adds a modern digital architecture for fast response, more simultaneous outputs and better diagnostics. The controller version (QMCC) integrates the sensor, a coplanar control valve and PID control; the meter version is the QMCM.

A Coriolis sensor measures mass flow directly, independent of fluid type and process variables, so the chemistry or conditions can change without recalibration. With a range of 0.001 to more than 27 kg/hr, the device reports mass flow, volume flow, density and temperature together with diagnostic values. A service port on a 2.5 mm jack and the free BEST (Brooks Expert Support Tool) software simplify setup and troubleshooting.

Using the QMC model code

Positions 1 to 4 select the QMCC controller or QMCM meter, position 5 the tube size and position 6 liquid or gas service. The valve is normally closed or absent for a meter, and the accuracy code gives 0.2 percent of rate for liquid, 0.5 percent for gas or 1.0 percent optional for gas. The enclosure code runs from IP40 with no area classification through IP66, UL recognised or listed Class 1 Division 2, ATEX Zone 2 and IECEx Zone 2 versions. Maximum pressure is 500 or 1500 psi, the tube is 316L stainless steel, and process connections include 5/16-24 UNF, tube compression from 1/16 inch to 1/4 inch and 6 mm, NPT female, VCR, VCO and 3.2 mm UPG, with metal seals available on VCR and UPG ports.

What to confirm before ordering

We need the fluid, minimum and maximum flow in mass units, inlet and outlet pressure, operating temperature, fitting, enclosure and area classification, signal type and seal material. The datasheet recommends additional upstream filtration for all installations and in-line filters of 1 or 10 micron on the smallest controller, and it notes that in-line filters are not recommended in moisture-sensitive applications. Units are purged to a dew point below minus 40 C before shipment.

How the Brooks QMC works

The fluid flows through a vibrating tube. The mass flow changes the motion of the tube, and the sensor measures that change directly. On the controller version, a coplanar control valve and PID control then hold the flow at the setpoint.

Where the QMC is used

  • Low-flow liquid dosing
  • Low-flow gas control
  • Process lines where the fluid changes
  • Replacement of second-generation QMB units
  • Skid and laboratory systems

Selection checklist for the QMC

  • Controller or meter version
  • Liquid or gas
  • Tube size

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the QMC

Mount the unit where vibration is low and keep the line full of fluid. Connect power and the outputs, then use the service port and BEST software for setup. Zero the unit with no flow and check the diagnostic values at regular intervals.

About brand

Brooks Instrument makes mass flow controllers, flowmeters and pressure and vacuum instruments for gases and liquids. The industrial chemist Stephen A. Brooks started the business in 1946 as the Brooks Rotameter Company near Philadelphia, building variable area flowmeters. After many years as part of Emerson, Brooks was sold to American Industrial Partners at the end of 2007 and has been a division of Illinois Tool Works (ITW) since January 2012. It is headquartered in Hatfield, Pennsylvania.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Brooks Instrument thermal and Coriolis mass flow controllers and variable area flowmeters for buyers in Oman and the GCC. Instruments are matched from the model code and the gas, range and calibration data on the label.

Where Brooks instruments are used

Brooks mass flow controllers dose gases in analyser systems, catalyst and pilot plant testing, gas blending, burner and combustion control, fuel cell test stands and semiconductor tools. Variable area flowmeters are widely used on purge gas, seal flush, sample and chemical injection lines in oil and gas, refining and petrochemical plants, where a simple local indication without external power is preferred.

Ordering Brooks instruments: what we need

Send the full model code and serial number from the label. Mass flow controllers are calibrated for a specific gas and full-scale flow, so state the gas or gas mixture, flow range, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, process connection, seal material, signal (analog, RS-485, DeviceNet, EtherNet/IP or other) and any hazardous-area requirement. For variable area meters add the fluid, density, viscosity, flow range, connection size, materials and whether alarms or a 4-20 mA output are needed.
