HYTORC jGun DIGITAL Pneumatic Torque Tool

The HYTORC jGun DIGITAL Single Speed is a pneumatic torque multiplier with a digital readout and a built-in torque adjustment. The cut sheet describes it as the world first torque-adjustable pneumatic multiplier with a digital readout and FRL-free operation: unlike other air systems, it does not need a separate filter, regulator and lubricator between the air line and the tool. It covers 81 to 10705 Nm in eight sizes and suits shops and sites that have compressed air but not hydraulic or battery power.

Torque is adjusted by twisting the control, and the digital display confirms the torque value instantly. A built-in silencer holds noise at 80 dB or less according to the manufacturer, and the corrosion-resistant motor is intended for tough conditions. The tool is made from aircraft-grade aluminum, has a low-vibration design to reduce hand-arm vibration risk and an ergonomic grip, and states +/- 5 percent accuracy. The coaxial spline accepts the HYTORC Washer driver and HYTORC Nut driver as well as other reaction options, and a variety of pneumatic connectors can be fitted.

Values are taken from the manufacturer cut sheet; output speed falls as torque capacity rises, so the larger models are slow and powerful.

When a pneumatic multiplier is the better choice

A pneumatic tool is attractive where compressed air is already piped to the work area, where sparks from electrical equipment are a concern, or where a quick setup without a pump is wanted. The trade-off is a slower rotation than most electric tools and the need for adequate air volume: check the compressor delivery and hose diameter against the tool requirement on the manual. The manufacturer also lists the jGun Single Speed and Dual Speed versions without a digital display and with optional silencer, which need a separate FRL; the DIGITAL version is the only one in the comparison with a built-in silencer, digital display, cycle counter and FRL-free operation. Use a reaction arm, washer or nut system suited to the joint, and keep hands clear of the reaction path. Confirm the reaction point is strong enough before applying torque, because all of the output torque is reacted somewhere.
