Kärcher HDS 12/18-4 S Hot Water High-Pressure Cleaner
Description
A lower-load super-class hot water cleaner for three-phase plants
The Kärcher HDS 12/18-4 S is a super-class hot water high-pressure cleaner with a water-cooled, slow-running four-pole electric motor, a robust three-piston axial pump and two detergent tanks. It sits just below the HDS 13/20-4 S: Kärcher prints 500 to 1200 litres per hour and 30 to 180 bar, with an 8 kW connected load.
The lower electrical demand is the practical difference. Sites with limited three-phase capacity, mobile workshops and maintenance bays can run a full-size hot water cleaner on a smaller supply while keeping the same 1330 x 750 x 1060 mm frame, 25 litre tank and burner concept as the larger machine.

Burner, controls and delivered equipment
The sheet lists the same hot water concept as the larger HDS 13/20-4 S: an eco!efficiency mode that runs in the economical range of about 60 °C at full flow, a highly efficient burner described as Made in Germany technology and a water-cooled motor intended for high performance and long service life. A 10 m high-pressure hose and extra storage space for accessories are part of the design.
Supplied with the machine are an EASY!Force Advanced gun with Servo Control, a 10 m Longlife hose (DN 8, 400 bar), a 1050 mm lance and a power nozzle. Equipment printed by Kärcher adds the pressure cut-off, a pole reverse plug for three-phase supply, the Soft Damping System, dry-running protection, two detergent tanks and an option for two-lance operation.

Comparing the HDS electric range
The HDS 12/18-4 S is the sensible pick when 180 bar and 1200 l/h are enough and the electrical supply is the constraint. The table lists the other HDS machines with the values Kärcher prints.
| Kärcher model | Flow rate (l/h) | Working pressure (bar) | Water temperature | Drive and load |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HDS 12/18-4 S (this page) | 500 – 1200 | 30 – 180 | min. 80 – max. 155 °C | Electric, 8 kW, 190 kg |
| HDS 10/21-4 M | 500 – 1000 | 30 – 210 | min. 80 – max. 155 °C | Electric, 8 kW, 160.2 kg |
| HDS 13/20-4 S | 600 – 1300 | 30 – 200 | min. 80 – max. 155 °C | Electric, 9.5 kW, 206 kg |
| HDS 7/16 C | 270 – 660 | 30 – 160 | max. 80 °C | Electric, 4.7 kW, 98 kg |
Is hot water the right answer for your cleaning task?
Cold water at high pressure removes loose mud and dust well, but it struggles with grease, diesel residue, hydraulic oil and fat. Heating the water softens these deposits so the jet lifts them with less detergent and in less time. The HDS 12/18-4 S is therefore most useful in vehicle and plant workshops, on oily machinery before maintenance, in food plant hygiene where fat is present, and on equipment that comes back from the field coated in a mix of sand and oil. For routine rinsing of lightly soiled surfaces, eco!efficiency mode at about 60 °C is often enough and keeps fuel use down; reserve the higher temperatures for heavy grease.
Plan the electrical supply and the working position together. The 5 m power cable means the machine stands near its socket, while the 10 m hose sets the cleaning reach, so a fixed wash bay usually works best with a dedicated outlet close to the bay.
Setting up and first start
- Place the machine on level ground in a well-ventilated area so burner exhaust gases can disperse, never in a closed room.
- Fill the fuel tank with the fuel type listed in the operating manual and fill the detergent tanks only with detergents approved for the machine.
- Connect a clean water supply that meets the inlet conditions in the manual and let water flow through the pump before switching on, so the dry-running protection is not triggered.
- Check the phase sequence; the pole reverse plug lets an electrician correct it at the plug if needed.
- Start in cold-water mode, check the hose, gun and lance connections for leaks, then switch on the burner and set the temperature.
Daily care and troubleshooting
Check the high-pressure hose for kinks and abrasion before each shift and replace a damaged hose rather than taping it. Clean the water inlet filter regularly, since debris here causes pressure loss and pump wear. If pressure fluctuates, look first for a blocked or worn nozzle, a clogged inlet filter or air drawn in through a loose inlet fitting. If the water does not heat, check the fuel level, the fuel filter and whether the burner has been switched on at the control. Burner servicing and pump maintenance should follow the intervals in Kärcher’s service documentation.
Notes for Omani and GCC sites
Many water supplies in Oman are hard, and scale builds up quickly inside a heating coil when hard water is heated repeatedly. Use the water treatment and descaling measures described in the Kärcher operating manual, and check the coil if heating performance drops over time. Keep the machine in shade when idle, as high summer temperatures shorten the life of hoses and seals left in the sun. In dusty yards, cover the machine when not in use and keep sand away from the fuel filler and water inlet. Wash bays near the coast should also rinse salt off the frame and fittings at the end of each working day.
Documents and quotation
The Kärcher product information sheet is attached as the datasheet, including the full accessory list. Before ordering, confirm supply voltage and phase sequence, fuel availability, ventilation for the burner exhaust, and the water inlet conditions for a hot water unit.
