Types of industrial PC and mobile device listed

Fanless embedded computers, such as the ADLINK MXE and MVP series, are sealed box PCs cooled through the housing. With no fan and no vents they tolerate dust and vibration, and they serve as edge computers, gateways and machine controllers. Rackmount chassis and single board computers, such as the Advantech IPC-623 chassis and ADLINK PICMG boards, are used where expansion cards are needed or where an older system based on a passive backplane is being kept alive. Panel PCs combine the computer and touchscreen in one unit for operator stations. Hazardous-area tablets and smartphones, such as the Tab-Ex, Smart-Ex and Agile X IS families, are certified for Zone 1/21 or Zone 2/22 and let technicians use maintenance, inspection and permit software inside the classified area.

Selecting a hazardous-area tablet or smartphone

The zone decides the device. Zone 1/21 devices can also be used in Zone 2/22, but not the other way round. Check the full Ex marking for gas group and temperature class, and for North American sites the Class and Division rating. After that, choose the operating system, the mobile network variant for the region, since radio approvals differ by country, and the accessories. Chargers, cases and headsets must be approved for the device, and batteries are normally charged only in the safe area.

Data needed for an industrial computer inquiry

For a box or panel PC send processor class, memory, storage, I/O ports, expansion slots, supply voltage, mounting, operating temperature and operating system. For a display unit add screen size and touch type. For Ex devices give the zone, model variant and accessories.

What is the difference between Zone 1 and Zone 2 mobile devices?

Zone 1 is an area where an explosive gas atmosphere is likely in normal operation, and Zone 2 one where it is unlikely and short-lived. Zone 1 devices are built to a higher protection level and can be used in both zones. Zone 2 devices face fewer design restrictions and may only be used in Zone 2. Check your area classification drawing before choosing.

Why choose a fanless industrial computer?

A fan is a wear part and draws dust into the housing. Fanless computers move heat through the chassis to external fins, so the enclosure can be closed and there are no moving parts apart from any rotating disks, which are usually replaced by solid-state storage. The result is a longer service interval. They do need free air around the housing, so follow the mounting clearances.

Can I replace an obsolete single board computer in an older system?

Often yes, but compatibility has to be checked item by item: the bus standard of the backplane, the slots used by existing cards, the chipset drivers for the operating system on site, and the video and serial interfaces. Send us the board model and a list of the fitted cards and operating system. We check the manufacturer's successor against that list before proposing it.

Which accessories can be used with an Ex tablet in the hazardous area?

Only accessories named in the device certificate or approved by the manufacturer for that model, such as specific leather cases, hand straps, headsets and scanners. Standard chargers and USB accessories are for the safe area only. Battery changing rules are stated in the manual and differ by model. List the accessories you need in the inquiry so matching approved items are offered.

What do you need to quote an industrial computer?

The manufacturer model number and configuration code if available. Otherwise: processor, memory, storage type and size, number and type of ports, expansion slots, supply voltage, mounting method, operating temperature, operating system and any approvals. For panel PCs add screen size, resolution and touch technology. For Ex mobiles add zone, network variant and accessories.
