Flow Computers
A flow computer takes the pulses or signals from a flowmeter, together with pressure, temperature and sometimes density or gas composition, and calculates corrected volume, mass or energy with a secure record of the totals. Seven Star LLC supplies flow computers in Oman from Emerson, OMNI, Elster, ABB and KROHNE, among others. The listed items run from panel-mounted custody transfer units to a field mount flow computer with local display.

Custody transfer, remote and field mounted flow computers
Units for fiscal metering include the OMNI 4000/7000 Series, the ABB SpiritIT Flow-X family, the Elster enCore FC1 and ZM1 and the gas-net F1, and the Emerson 7955. These handle one or several meter runs, for gas or liquid depending on the application software. The Emerson ROC800-Series and FloBoss units combine flow calculation with remote control and telemetry functions for wellheads, pipelines and unmanned stations. The Fluidwell F126-EG is a field mount flow computer: a compact unit at the meter that shows rate and total locally. Galvanic and Cameron NuFlo devices are also listed.
Calculation standards a flow computer has to support
The standards are set by the metering contract. For natural gas, orifice metering follows AGA 3 or ISO 5167, turbine meters AGA 7, ultrasonic meters AGA 9, and compressibility is calculated to AGA 8 or ISO 12213. Liquid hydrocarbons are corrected for temperature and pressure using the API Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards. A flow computer for custody transfer also needs an audit trail, alarm and event logs, and often a pattern approval such as MID or OIML for the country of use.
How to specify a flow computer
Define the number of meter runs and the meter type on each: pulse, ultrasonic, Coriolis or differential pressure. List the inputs and outputs needed, including dual pulse, HART, analog and digital channels. State the fluid, the calculation standards, whether a gas chromatograph or densitometer will be connected, whether prover or batching functions are required, and the communication with the station supervisory system, usually Modbus over serial or Ethernet. For replacements, send the model code, the firmware or application version and the existing configuration report. We check these against the manufacturer documentation for metering projects across the GCC.
What to include in your inquiry
These details let us quote the right item the first time.
- Model and part number of the existing unit
- Number of meter runs and stream type (gas or liquid)
- Required I/O and communication ports
- Firmware or application version, when replacing a unit
- Quantity and required delivery date
Missing some of them? Send what you have. A nameplate photo or an old part number is enough to start.

Frequently Asked Questions
A PLC can do the arithmetic, but a custody transfer flow computer is a measuring instrument. Its calculations are verified against the published standards, its inputs meet defined accuracy limits, and its totals, configuration changes and alarms are stored in a secured audit trail that both parties to a sale can inspect. Many jurisdictions and contracts require pattern approval, which general purpose controllers do not hold.
The hardware is often shared, but the application differs. Gas applications calculate compressibility and often energy from composition, with pressure and temperature as live inputs. Liquid applications apply temperature and pressure volume correction factors, handle density or product tables, and may add meter proving, batching and ticketing. When ordering, state gas or liquid for each stream so the right firmware or license is supplied.
A field mount flow computer sits at the meter instead of in a control room panel. It has a weatherproof housing, is often battery, loop or DC powered, and shows flow rate and totals on a local display. Typical tasks are totalizing, temperature and pressure compensation of a gas or liquid flow, and retransmitting pulses or a 4-20 mA signal. Intrinsically safe versions are used in hazardous areas.
Send the model, hardware revision, firmware or application version and, if possible, a printout of the configuration. We check the unit against the manufacturer documentation and propose the manufacturer's successor where the model is discontinued. Migration is more than a like-for-like swap: I/O counts, communication maps to the supervisory system and the approved calculation set all need to be confirmed for the new unit.
For each run: the meter signal, which may be single or dual pulse, a serial link from an ultrasonic or Coriolis meter, or differential pressure; a static pressure transmitter; and a temperature transmitter. Gas stations add composition from a chromatograph or fixed values, liquid stations often add density. Valve status, prover detector switches and sampler outputs are connected through digital I/O.
