Where it fits and what to check

It fits machine builders and panel shops that need gigabit speed between a controller, a drive and a camera or edge PC without paying for management features. A PoE-capable sibling is available in the same line.

On the practical side, mounting is listed as din-rail mounting; wall mounting (with optional kit); the housing is metal; the stated MTBF is 3,404,784 hrs; the warranty period is 5 years. Treat the MTBF as a manufacturer prediction under its stated method, not a guarantee for your site.

Please check whether the standard or the -T extended-temperature version is required and the DC supply available in the cabinet before you place an order. Seven Star LLC supplies as an independent company and prices against the precise code requested.

Gigabit speed matters when a camera stream, a vision sensor and a controller share one link, and all five ports negotiate 10/100/1000 Mbps with automatic MDI/MDI-X, so cable type is not a concern. Because the switch is unmanaged there is no IP address to assign and no configuration file to back up; the trade-off is that VLANs, port mirroring and ring redundancy are not available, so choose a managed model where those are required. Moxa also notes that enabling the QoS DIP switch turns on multicast filtering, which blocks LLDP and PROFINET PTCP-delay traffic, so leave that switch off on PROFINET networks that rely on those frames.

Installing the switch in a control cabinet

The slim metal housing of the EDS-G2005-EL makes it easy to fit beside terminals, controllers and power supplies on a standard DIN rail. Leave enough space above and below for airflow and for the Ethernet cables to bend without strain at the RJ45 sockets, and keep the switch away from heat sources such as drives, braking resistors and transformers. Where wall mounting is preferred, use the optional kit listed in the specification table rather than improvised brackets.

Feed the switch from a stable DC supply within the stated operating voltage range, wired through the removable terminal block. Although the switch has reverse polarity protection, check polarity carefully during installation, and use a dedicated, labelled circuit so that the network can be isolated without switching off other equipment. Connect the cabinet earth according to the installation guide; a good earth connection helps the switch withstand the electrical noise that is common in industrial panels.

Cabling for gigabit links

Gigabit Ethernet uses all four pairs in the cable, so use cable and connectors rated for gigabit operation and terminate them carefully. Keep Ethernet cables in a separate duct from motor and power cables, cross power wiring at right angles, and avoid tight bends or crushed cables behind panel doors. Shielded industrial cable is a sensible choice near drives and other sources of interference.

Commissioning and network checks

Since the switch needs no configuration, commissioning is mainly a matter of checking the physical layer. After power-up, confirm the power indication and check that each connected port shows a link at the expected speed on its LED. A port that links at a lower speed than expected usually points to a cabling or termination fault, which is far easier to correct before the machine is handed over.

Draw a simple network diagram showing which device is connected to each port, and label both ends of every cable. Even on a small five-port network, this saves time when a device has to be replaced or a fault traced. Confirm that the DIP switch settings match the intended use, as explained above for PROFINET networks.

Operating in Omani plant conditions

Machine panels and small control cabinets in Oman can become very hot in summer, especially outdoors or in rooms without air conditioning. Measure the temperature inside the cabinet during the hottest part of the day and compare it with the operating range in the specification table. If the margin is small, improve ventilation or cooling, or select the extended-temperature version mentioned above.

Dust and humidity are the other common concerns. Keep cabinet doors closed and seals in good condition, fit dust caps on unused ports, and inspect connectors during planned maintenance for corrosion or loose latches. Because an unmanaged switch has no remote diagnostics, a short visual check of the port LEDs during routine rounds is a useful habit.

About brand

Since 1987 Moxa, based in New Taipei City, Taiwan, has built networking hardware for places where an office switch would fail: substations, wellhead panels, roadside cabinets. Seven Star LLC lists Moxa industrial Ethernet switches and fiber converters and supplies Moxa networking devices to system integrators and plant teams in Oman as an independent supplier. Each request is checked against the full Moxa model name before we quote.

Moxa switches and converters listed here

The EDS-G508E is a managed switch with eight Gigabit ports from the EDS managed line. The EDS-316-MM-SC-T is a 16-port unmanaged switch with 14 copper ports, two multi-mode SC fiber ports and the wide-temperature option (-40 to 75 C). The TCF-142-S-SC-T belongs to the TCF-142 series, which converts RS-232/422/485 serial signals to single-mode fiber. Moxa also makes serial device servers, protocol gateways, wireless devices and industrial computers, used on SCADA and telemetry networks across the GCC.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Moxa EDS-G2005-EL?
Moxa lists it as: Unmanaged full Gigabit Ethernet switch with 5 10/100/1000 BaseT(X) ports, 12/24/48 power input, metal housing, -10 to 60°C operating temperature. An economical full-Gigabit five-port switch built for light industrial use, with the same simple plug-and-play behaviour as the rest of the EL range.
What power supply does the EDS-G2005-EL need?
The Moxa specification gives an input voltage of 12/24/48 VDC. Check the terminal arrangement and, where relevant, the redundant-input wiring against your panel supply before ordering.
What operating temperature range applies to the EDS-G2005-EL?
The listed operating temperature is -10 to 60°C (14 to 140°F). Wide-temperature versions carry a -T suffix in Moxa's order codes where the series offers them, and they are separate order codes.
Does the EDS-G2005-EL need configuration?
It is an unmanaged switch: ports auto-negotiate speed and crossover, so it works as plug-and-play without software configuration, and any alarm or switch functions are set on the unit itself.
Where is the EDS-G2005-EL datasheet and how do I ask for a quotation?
You can download the Moxa datasheet from this page. For a quotation, send us the full order code, quantity and destination; Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier based in Muscat.
