Moxa TCC-100 RS-232 to RS-422/485 Converter

Description

How the TCC-100 extends a link

TCC-100 is listed by Moxa as: RS-232 to RS-422/485 converter. A compact industrial converter that bridges RS-232 devices to RS-422 or RS-485 networks, extending cable reach and adding electrical isolation in the TCC-100I variant.

From the manufacturer’s specification table, the power input is 12 to 48 VDC; operating temperature is -20 to 60°C (-4 to 140°F); dimensions are 67 x 100.4 x 22 mm (2.64 x 3.93 x 0.87 in); weight is 148 g (0.33 lb); the enclosure is rated IP30.

Standards and approvals printed for this model include safety standard UL 60950-1. Approvals can differ between variants of a series, so check the one on the exact order code.

Selecting the right variant

It is useful for connecting a serial master to remote RS-485 instruments and for turning a point-to-point RS-232 line into a multi-drop bus.

On the practical side, mounting is listed as wall mounting; din-rail mounting (with optional kit); the housing is metal; the stated MTBF is 3,017,857 hrs; the warranty period is 5 years. Treat the MTBF as a manufacturer prediction under its stated method, not a guarantee for your site.

Related models in the TCC-100 family

The Moxa product list shows these models in the same family page (4 entries): TCC-100, TCC-100-T, TCC-100I, TCC-100I-T. Suffixes such as -T generally mark wide-temperature versions and fiber suffixes (M, S, MM, SS with SC or ST) mark the connector and fiber type, but the order code printed on the datasheet governs.

Key features of the TCC-100

  • Converts RS-232 to either RS-422 or RS-485 in 2-wire or 4-wire form, selected on the unit, so one model covers several wiring schemes.
  • Automatic data direction control on RS-485: the converter switches between transmit and receive by itself, without the host having to toggle RTS.
  • Selectable pull-high/pull-low resistors and 120 Ω termination, which simplifies setting up a stable bus.
  • Baud rates from 50 bps to 921.6 kbps, including non-standard values used by some instruments.
  • Wide 12 to 48 VDC power input with overload current protection.
  • Metal housing, terminal block connections and a 5-year warranty.

Why convert RS-232 to RS-485

RS-232 was designed for short, point-to-point connections and is sensitive to ground potential differences and electrical noise. RS-485 uses balanced differential signalling, which tolerates noise far better and allows much longer cable runs as well as several devices on the same pair. Placing a TCC-100 next to an RS-232 PC port, HMI or legacy controller is a simple way to reach Modbus RTU meters, flow computers, weighing indicators or drives spread across a plant.

Isolated or non-isolated?

Choose the TCC-100I when the two ends of the link are fed from different power systems, when the cable runs between buildings, or when it shares trays with power cables. Isolation breaks ground loops and protects the RS-232 equipment from surges induced on the long side of the link. For short, clean runs inside one panel, the standard TCC-100 is usually sufficient.

Wiring and set-up practice

  • Use twisted-pair, shielded cable for the RS-422/485 side and earth the shield at one end only.
  • Terminate the bus at its two physical ends; adding termination at intermediate nodes loads the line and causes errors.
  • On 2-wire RS-485 keep Data+ and Data− on the same twisted pair and connect the signal ground where the devices provide it.
  • Match the converter baud rate expectations to the slowest device; the converter itself is transparent to the protocol.
  • Wire a DC supply of 12 to 48 V; a common 24 VDC panel supply is suitable.

Troubleshooting a link

When there is no communication, first confirm that the mode setting matches the wiring (RS-422, 2-wire or 4-wire RS-485). Swapped Data+ and Data− lines are the next most common fault and are easy to test by reversing them. Intermittent errors on long buses usually point to missing termination, incorrect biasing or a shield earthed at both ends.

Use in Oman and GCC sites

Serial links remain common in oil and gas metering skids, water utilities and substation equipment in the region. The standard model operates from −20 to 60 °C; field cabinets exposed to summer sun can exceed that, in which case the -T wide-temperature version is the appropriate choice. The IP30 housing must be installed inside an enclosure that protects against dust and condensation.

What to include in your RFQ

  • Exact model: TCC-100, TCC-100-T, TCC-100I or TCC-100I-T.
  • Quantity and delivery location.
  • Whether the optional DIN-rail kit is needed.
  • Brief description of the link, such as cable length and connected devices, if you want the model choice reviewed.

About brand

Since 1987 Moxa, based in New Taipei City, Taiwan, has built networking hardware for places where an office switch would fail: substations, wellhead panels, roadside cabinets. Seven Star LLC lists Moxa industrial Ethernet switches and fiber converters and supplies Moxa networking devices to system integrators and plant teams in Oman as an independent supplier. Each request is checked against the full Moxa model name before we quote.

The EDS-G508E is a managed switch with eight Gigabit ports from the EDS managed line. The EDS-316-MM-SC-T is a 16-port unmanaged switch with 14 copper ports, two multi-mode SC fiber ports and the wide-temperature option (-40 to 75 C). The TCF-142-S-SC-T belongs to the TCF-142 series, which converts RS-232/422/485 serial signals to single-mode fiber. Moxa also makes serial device servers, protocol gateways, wireless devices and industrial computers, used on SCADA and telemetry networks across the GCC.
