Brand:

ABB PSR45-600-70 Compact Soft Starter, 45 A

Description

PSR45-600-70 (order code 1SFA896111R7000) gives a motor of up to 45 A a controlled voltage-ramp start and stop from one of ABB’s most compact softstarters. A voltage ramp replaces the abrupt across-the-line start, giving the driven machine a gradual torque build-up and a soft stop. ABB builds it as a two-phase controlled unit whose internal bypass takes over once the motor is at speed. ABB names pumps, fans, compressors and conveyors as typical duties, and this size suits 22 kW class motors, the largest size in the 1.0 kg housing.

See motor soft starters for the full list, and the PSR30-600-70 for a 30 A alternative.

Sizing notes for a 45 A load

Start from the motor current on the nameplate: 45 A is the ceiling of this model, and ABB sizes duty by current rather than by kW. Under ABB’s reference conditions of 40 C, 4 x Ie and a 6 second ramp the PSR45 allows 10 starts per hour as supplied, rising to 20 with the optional fan; the figures assume 50 percent on-time. Between 40 C and 60 C derate by 0.8 percent for every degree. Above 1000 m the current is derated as 100 minus (altitude minus 1000) divided by 150, in percent, up to 4000 m. For heavy starts or higher starting rates ask ABB’s softstarter selection tool, or step up a size.

For short-circuit and overload protection the catalogue lists MS165, gG 125 A, J-type 90 A, TF65 and AF52 as one example set. The contactor does not serve the softstarter, yet is often fitted to let the overload relay disconnect the circuit. Kits for direct connection to ABB manual motor starters are available, as is the PS-FBPA fieldbus plug adapter. For other combinations use ABB’s online coordination tool.

Housing group and installation

It is built in the PSR37 to PSR45 frame: IP10 main circuit, IP20 control circuit, 10 VA at 100-240 V AC, DIN rail or screw fixing. Ramp and voltage limits are set on three dials, and two LEDs report On/Ready and Run. Several units can share one enclosure because the housing is narrow. Leave the clearances given in the manual for cooling.

Key features of the compact PSR range

  • Integrated bypass: once the motor is at full speed the internal bypass carries the current, which keeps the 8.1 W maximum power loss low and reduces heat in the panel.
  • Two-phase control: a compact and economical design for standard duties such as pumps, fans, compressors and conveyors.
  • Simple setup: three dials set the start ramp, the stop ramp and the initial/end voltage; no software is required.
  • Status at a glance: On/Ready and Run LEDs show the state of the unit.
  • Accessories: optional fan for a higher number of starts, connection kits to ABB manual motor starters and the PS-FBPA fieldbus plug adapter.

Setting the three dials

Dial Range Practical starting point
Start ramp 1 to 20 s Choose the shortest time that gives a smooth start without nuisance tripping; heavier loads usually need longer
Stop ramp 0 to 20 s Use a soft stop on pumps to reduce water hammer; set to 0 for a free coast stop on fans
Initial / end voltage 40 to 70 % Raise the setting if the motor does not begin to turn at the start of the ramp

A soft starter reduces starting current and torque but does not control running speed. If the process needs variable flow or speed, a frequency converter is the correct choice instead.

Use in Oman and GCC conditions

Panel temperatures in summer are the main sizing issue in the region. The PSR45 is rated at 40 °C and derates by 0.8 percent per degree up to 60 °C, so a panel running at 50 °C reduces the available current by about 8 percent; check the motor current against the derated value, and consider the optional fan or the next size, such as the PSR60, where the margin is small. The open IP10 main circuit must be installed inside a suitable enclosure, and in dusty locations that enclosure should be well sealed with filtered ventilation.

Typical regional duties include water transfer pumps, irrigation pumps, booster sets, ventilation fans and air compressors. On pump stations, the soft stop helps reduce pressure surges in long pipelines.

Installation and maintenance checklist

  • Fit the recommended short-circuit protection device and an overload relay, as the coordination examples in the catalogue show.
  • Respect the clearances above and below the unit given in the manual.
  • Check that the control supply is 100 to 240 V AC for this -70 version.
  • Retighten power terminals after the first period of operation and during planned shutdowns.
  • Keep the unit and its ventilation path free of dust.

Reading the type code, ordering and documents

In PSR45-600-70, the figure after PSR is the size designation, 600 is the maximum voltage and the suffix -70 marks the 100-240 V AC control supply; the 24 V AC/DC version carries -11 and a different order code. Send us the motor nameplate, supply and control voltage, starting rate and accessory needs, and we check them against the ABB catalogue before quoting.

About brand

ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.

ABB product families on this page

Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.

Where ABB instruments and drives are used

Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.

Ordering ABB parts: what we need

For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
