Normalab NTB Classic Copper Strip Corrosion Test Bath

Description

A thermostatic bath for copper strip corrosion testing

The NTB Classic is a stainless steel thermostatic bath from Normalab for the copper strip corrosion test. A polished copper strip is immersed in the sample at a fixed temperature for a fixed time, then compared with a colour standard to classify how corrosive the product is. The test is routine for fuels, solvents and lubricants because sulphur compounds that attack copper are a practical concern for pipes, fittings and engine parts.

Normalab lists ASTM D130, D4048, D7095, D7671, EN/ISO 2160, IP 154 and IP 112 and related methods. Scope covers aviation gasoline, aviation turbine fuel, automotive gasoline, cleaners (Stoddard) solvent, kerosine, diesel fuel, distillate fuel oil, lubricating oil and natural gasoline or other hydrocarbons with a vapour pressure no greater than 124 kPa at 37.8 °C.

Accessories and consumables

The bath is delivered with six lids and a mounting hook (P/N 23005). Accessories needed for the test are listed in the leaflet: a pack of 10 copper strips (ref. 15115), the ASTM copper strip corrosion colour test standard (ref. 15114), test tubes 25 x 150 mm (ref. 12780, six maximum), an ASTM 12C thermometer from -20 to 102 °C (ref. 11499, supplied without certificate, calibration on request) and a flat glass test tube (ref. 19008).

For sample preparation Normalab lists a single strip polishing vise, silicon carbide paper (220 grit) and powder (150 mesh), a white PP bowl, absorbent cotton, a chronometer, forceps, and non-powdered nitrile gloves. Silicone oil is available as a 20 L bottle of 10 cSt for ambient to 100 °C and a 5 L bottle of 47V20 for 100 to 150 °C.

Two further items depend on the procedure: the copper corrosion test cylinder (ref. 941492, six fit the bath) for aviation gasoline and higher vapour pressure samples, and the holder for test tubes (ref. 23008) for the test tube procedure used with diesel, fuel oil, automotive gasoline, cleaners solvent, kerosine and lubricating oil.

Selecting and installing the bath

Decide first which procedure applies, because it determines whether pressure cylinders or test tube holders are needed. Plan water or a chiller connection if tests run at ambient temperature, and a local source for isooctane, and enough bench space for the 455 x 295 x 440 mm bath plus a safe place to prepare and polish strips. Technicians should follow the grading and timing set out in the chosen standard, since the bath only supplies the stable temperature. Confirm accessory quantities, certificate requirements for the thermometer, and the 230 V supply. Related equipment is listed under liquid analytical systems.

About brand

Normalab designs and manufactures laboratory test instruments and laboratory glassware for petroleum products at its site in Valliquerville, France. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists Normalab spare parts: the 60606 circulation pump for the coolant circuit of the NDI 450 automatic distillation analyzer, and the 60448 thermal detection thermocouple. We source Normalab parts by their five-digit reference number.

Normalab instrument families

The manufacturer arranges its instruments by the property tested: flammability, volatility, viscosity, cold flow properties, cleanliness and purity, lubricants, and bitumen, wax and grease. Its glassware line supports the same tests. The methods referenced are ASTM, ISO and IP. Refinery and fuel quality laboratories in the GCC run these instruments daily, which is why the usual request is for a replacement part rather than a complete instrument.

Ordering Normalab parts: what we need

Send the Normalab reference number of the part, the instrument model and its serial number, and a photo of the instrument nameplate. Where the part is a sensor or pump, a photo of the old item with its connector helps the manufacturer confirm the version fitted to your serial number. If you need a complete instrument, name the test method and the products you test.
