Brand:

SKF LGHP 2 High Temperature Polyurea Bearing Grease

Description

A di-urea grease built for hot, fast electric motor bearings

SKF LGHP 2 is a premium mineral oil grease that uses a modern polyurea (di-urea) thickener. SKF recommends it for electric motors and similar applications, and the leaflet stresses extremely long life at high temperatures, a wide temperature range from -40 to +150 C, excellent corrosion protection, high thermal and mechanical stability, good start-up behaviour at low temperatures and low noise. It is also described as compatible with common polyurea and lithium thickened greases.

Low noise and long life are the two reasons this grease turns up on motor nameplates and in motor repair shops. A quiet grease matters on ball bearings turning at medium and high speed, and long life at temperature matters when a motor sits in a hot room and relubrication access is poor.

Applications named by SKF

The leaflet lists small, medium and large electric motors, industrial fans including high speed fans, water pumps, rolling bearings in textile, paper processing and drying machines, applications with medium and high speed ball (and roller) bearings at medium and high temperatures, clutch release bearings, vertical shaft applications and kiln trucks and rollers. Pack sizes are LGHP 2/0.4 (420 ml cartridge), LGHP 2/1, LGHP 2/5, LGHP 2/18, LGHP 2/50 and LGHP 2/170 (170 kg drum).

What to check before ordering

The compatibility statement covers common polyurea and lithium thickened greases, but it is not a licence to mix without thought. When converting a motor from another grease, clean out as much of the old grease as practical and watch bearing temperature after the change. Check the motor nameplate or manual for any grease specification, confirm the pack designation, and note that all values are typical. If the application is hotter than 150 C or heavily loaded at low speed, a different grease from the SKF range is the better starting point. Related lubrication items sit under Electric Motors.

Store cartridges, cans and pails closed and clean, use them within the 5 year shelf life stated in the leaflet, and wipe the nipple before greasing so that dirt is not pushed into the bearing. For motors with a grease outlet, run the motor while greasing slowly and leave the outlet open for a short time afterwards so surplus grease can escape; this is general good practice and the motor manual takes precedence.

Key properties in practice

  • Polyurea (di-urea) thickener with mineral base oil, NLGI class 2 to 3, coloured blue.
  • Operating range of -40 to +150 °C and a dropping point above 240 °C.
  • Base oil viscosity of 96 mm²/s at 40 °C, a medium viscosity that suits ball bearings at medium and high speed.
  • Emcor corrosion rating 0-0, including with salt water, and water resistance rating 1 max.
  • R0F grease life L50 of at least 1,000 h at 10,000 r/min and 150 °C.
  • DIN 51825 code K2N-40.

Understanding the test values

Several figures in the specification table describe how the grease behaves over time. Worked penetration after 100,000 strokes and the roll stability result show how much the grease softens under mechanical working; a stable grease stays in the bearing rather than running out. The oil separation figure of 3 % maximum over seven days at 40 °C shows how much oil bleeds from the thickener, which matters for storage and for lubrication of the rolling contacts. The R0F and R2F tests are SKF bearing rig tests at speed and temperature, and they are the main basis for the long-life claim.

Choosing the pack size

Designation Pack Typical use
LGHP 2/0.4 420 ml cartridge Hand grease guns and SKF automatic lubricators that take cartridges
LGHP 2/1 1 kg can Workshop use, packing bearings during motor repair
LGHP 2/5 5 kg Maintenance teams covering a group of motors
LGHP 2/18 18 kg Pumps and central filling of grease guns
LGHP 2/50 and 2/170 50 kg and 170 kg drum Motor repair shops and high-volume plants with drum pumps

Relubrication good practice

  • Use the relubrication quantity and interval given by the motor manufacturer or calculated from SKF bearing data; too much grease raises bearing temperature as surely as too little.
  • Mark grease nipples and guns with the grease name to avoid accidental mixing with another product.
  • Record bearing temperature or vibration after regreasing so the effect can be compared over time.
  • Shorten intervals for bearings in hot or dusty locations, as a general rule.

Applications in Oman and the GCC

High ambient temperature is a constant factor in the region, and many motors run in pump houses, cooling tower areas, desalination plants and HVAC plant rooms where the air can be very hot in summer. A grease with a wide temperature range, good oxidation life and strong corrosion protection, including the 0-0 salt water Emcor result, fits these duties well, for example on fan motors, water pumps and coastal installations exposed to humid, salty air.

What to include in an RFQ

Give the designation with pack size (for example LGHP 2/0.4 or LGHP 2/18), the quantity in packs, the delivery location, and whether grease guns or automatic lubricators should be quoted at the same time.

Documents and quotation

Download the SKF product data sheet from this page. For a quotation, send the full designation including pack size, such as LGHP 2/5, the quantity and the delivery point.

About brand

SKF, founded in 1907 in Gothenburg, Sweden, is best known for rolling bearings, seals and lubrication systems, and it also makes the tools maintenance crews use to mount, align and monitor rotating equipment. Seven Star LLC lists SKF bearings, maintenance tools and condition monitoring instruments and supplies them by full designation to plants and workshops in Oman.

SKF bearings and maintenance tools listed here

Four items show the spread of the range: the 6206-2RS1 deep groove ball bearing with rubber seals on both sides, the TIH 030m induction heater for mounting bearings, the TKSA 41 laser shaft alignment tool, and the Microlog Analyzer AX (CMXA 80) vibration data collector. Other SKF bearings can be quoted from the full designation.

Ordering SKF bearings and tools: what we need

An SKF bearing designation is read in three parts: the basic number, then suffixes for seals or shields, cage, clearance and tolerance. Send it complete, for example 6206-2RS1/C3, because the suffixes change the part. For tools and instruments, send the model designation and say which accessories or kits you need. If markings are worn off, give us bore, outside diameter and width in millimeters. We answer SKF spare parts inquiries from all GCC countries.
