Hughes STD-58G Portable 28 L Self-Contained Eye Wash
Description
The Hughes STD-58G is a portable 28 litre eye wash in a stainless steel pressurised cylinder, intended as a secondary measure beside fixed eye/face wash units.
Back-up eye wash in a stainless cylinder
The datasheet describes it as a secondary safety measure to supplement fixed installation eye wash units. Pressing the push plate releases the protective dust covers from the aerated diffusers and delivers 1.5 litres per minute for up to 15 minutes from the 28 litre (7.4 US gal) cylinder. Filling and operating instructions are printed on the cylinder.
Operating pressure is printed as 6.9 bar g (100 psi) with a burst pressure of 69 bar g (1000 psi). For minor contamination of other body parts an optional Optiflex handheld can be fitted. The cylinder is 375 x 312 x 990 mm and weighs 38 kg (84 lb) full.

Where a pressurised portable unit is the right tool
A pressurised cylinder gives flow without needing elevation, so it can sit on the floor near a bench, a workshop door or a vehicle. It is not a substitute for a plumbed eye wash where the standard requires one; the manufacturer’s own wording is that it supplements fixed units. Site it where a worker with impaired vision can reach it in a few seconds, and keep the route to it clear.
Because the cylinder is pressurised, filling and pressurising must follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and the Hughes installation guide for this model covers the procedure. Use the water preservative listed as an option if the unit will stand unused between weekly tests, and record the fill date on the label.
| Hughes model | Configuration | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| STD-68G | 45 L portable gravity fed eye wash | Table or wall mounted back-up |
| STD-38G | 15 L eye, face and body wash with handheld | Minor splash rinse |
| OptiWash | 38 L wall mounted gravity fed eye wash | No plumbed supply |
| STD-40K/45G | Mobile 114 L shower and eye wash | Stand-by and shutdown cover |
Options and what to confirm before ordering
Listed options are an eye wash sign, Hydroclenz for the eye wash, a water preservative additive and a handheld eye, face and body shower. Confirm the filling and pressurising method, the storage temperature, the mounting position and the required duration. The 1.5 L/min flow printed in the datasheet should be compared with your site requirement for portable units before ordering.
Documents and quotation
Two Hughes documents are linked from this page: the English datasheet for STD-58G and the installation, operation and maintenance guide for its family, both unaltered. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat and prepares quotations for STD-58G and related Hughes models once the request states where the unit will be mounted, who will refill it, and the routine for water changes and tests. More site safety equipment is listed under Safety and PPE.
