Hanna HI98192 Waterproof Portable EC, TDS and Salinity Meter
Description
Conductivity, TDS, resistivity and salinity from pure water to brine
The HI98192 is a waterproof portable conductivity meter that also reports total dissolved solids, resistivity and salinity. It covers 0.001 µS/cm up to 400 mS/cm of conductivity with auto-ranging, which lets one instrument handle ultrapure rinse water, process condensate, cooling-tower water and seawater-strength brine. Hanna states that the instrument complies with the USP standard, which makes it relevant to pure-water checks as well as general plant use.
Temperature is measured from -20.0 to 120.0 °C by a sensor inside the four-ring stainless steel HI763133 probe supplied with the kit, so the meter can apply temperature compensation continuously without a separate thermometer.

Built for a wide conductivity span
Conductivity meters often force a choice between a low-range cell for pure water and a high-range cell for process liquids. The HI98192 combines both ends by auto-ranging across six decades and by accepting a five-point calibration from 0.00 µS/cm to 111.8 mS/cm. The user can fix a range manually, select a reference temperature of 15, 20 or 25 °C, set a temperature coefficient, and choose between three salinity scales according to the sample.
Diagnostic features alert the operator when the electrode needs cleaning, the meter recognises when the probe has been changed, and the manual describes a probe replatinization routine for the conductivity cell. Auto Hold captures the first stable reading, and the GLP feature recalls the last calibration for traceability.
Applications, points to check and what ships in the kit
Plant chemists use this class of meter for reverse-osmosis permeate, boiler feedwater, cooling water, condensate return, rinse water, hydrotest water and effluent. Brine and seawater work is covered by the salinity modes and the 400 mS/cm upper limit.
Confirm the expected conductivity range of each sample, the temperature compensation method your procedure requires, the probe cable length, and whether certified calibration standards must be bought with the meter. The 0.001 µS/cm lowest range is marked with an asterisk on Hanna’s own page, so for ultrapure-water validation confirm the working conditions with the manufacturer.
Per Hanna, the HI98192 is supplied with the HI763133 stainless steel four-ring conductivity probe, HI7031M 1413 µS/cm and HI7035M 111.8 mS/cm calibration solutions (230 mL each), two 100 mL beakers, HI92000 PC software, an HI920015 micro USB cable, four AA batteries, instruction manual, quick start guide, quality certificate and an HI720192 rugged carrying case. Related Hanna portable meters include the HI98190 for pH and ORP, the HI98193 for dissolved oxygen and the HI98199 for pH, EC and DO.
How the Hanna HI98192 works
The probe passes a small current through the sample and the meter measures how well the water carries it. It uses the sensor in the probe to correct the reading for temperature. TDS, resistivity and salinity are then calculated from the conductivity value.
