Brand:

Moxa NPort 5410 4-Port RS-232 Serial Device Server

Description

Four independent RS-232 ports with an LCD for on-site setup

The Moxa NPort 5410 connects up to four RS-232 serial devices to an Ethernet network. Every port works independently, so port 1 can run Real COM for a SCADA driver, port 2 can act as a TCP server and ports 3 and 4 as TCP clients. A built-in LCD panel and four buttons show the server name, serial number and IP address and allow the IP address, netmask and gateway to be entered without a PC (standard-temperature models only). Dual DC power inputs, a terminal block and a power jack, allow two supplies, and a built-in buzzer and real-time clock provide alerts. The series also includes RS-422/485 and isolated variants, described below.

Choosing and installing

Choose the 5410 when all four devices are RS-232. For RS-485 multidrop lines use the 5430 or 5450; isolated models help where devices sit at different earth potentials. The DIP switches on the bottom panel set termination and pull-up or pull-down resistors for RS-485, so no external resistors are needed. The LCD is not fitted on -T models, so set IP parameters through the web or Telnet console. Compare the two-port NPort 5210A if fewer connections are needed. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, quotes the exact model; confirm serial standard, isolation and temperature before ordering. The Moxa datasheet (version 2.1) is attached, and related products are in Industrial Communications. The 740 g metal case has mounting ears for wall mounting, and a DIN-rail kit is available as an option. Medical-grade EMC ratings are printed for the 5410, 5450 and 5450I only, so check the model if that matters. Four ports in one box reduce IP addresses and switch ports compared with four single-port servers, but they also concentrate failure risk, so for critical loops consider splitting devices across two units. Moxa lists marine approval by DNV, with a 24 VDC supply for DNV installations, and medical EMC compliance (EN 60601-1-2 Class B, EN 55011) for the 5410, 5450 and 5450I. Immunity levels printed include 6 kV contact ESD and 2 kV power EFT. MTBF figures range from 678,381 hours for the NPort 5450I to 1,213,993 hours for the NPort 5450-T.

How the Moxa NPort 5410 works

The device sits between serial equipment and the Ethernet network. Data from a serial port is packed into network packets and sent to the host. Data from the host is unpacked and sent out of the serial port. Each of the four ports has its own mode, so one port can serve a SCADA driver while another talks to a remote host. The host sees the port as a normal COM port when Real COM mode is used.

Where the NPort 5410 is used

  • Connecting serial instruments to SCADA
  • Remote access to RS-232 devices
  • Retrofitting older equipment to Ethernet
  • Control rooms with several serial devices
  • Machine builders and system integrators

About brand

Since 1987 Moxa, based in New Taipei City, Taiwan, has built networking hardware for places where an office switch would fail: substations, wellhead panels, roadside cabinets. Seven Star LLC lists Moxa industrial Ethernet switches and fiber converters and supplies Moxa networking devices to system integrators and plant teams in Oman as an independent supplier. Each request is checked against the full Moxa model name before we quote.

Moxa switches and converters listed here

The EDS-G508E is a managed switch with eight Gigabit ports from the EDS managed line. The EDS-316-MM-SC-T is a 16-port unmanaged switch with 14 copper ports, two multi-mode SC fiber ports and the wide-temperature option (-40 to 75 C). The TCF-142-S-SC-T belongs to the TCF-142 series, which converts RS-232/422/485 serial signals to single-mode fiber. Moxa also makes serial device servers, protocol gateways, wireless devices and industrial computers, used on SCADA and telemetry networks across the GCC.
