EagleBurgmann HRGS-D Gas-Lubricated Double Cartridge Seal

Description

A gas-lubricated double cartridge seal for contact-free operation in pumps

The EagleBurgmann HRGS-D is a gas-lubricated, balanced double seal in cartridge form for pumps handling gases and liquids, including media that contain solids. The two seal pairs run on a gas barrier instead of a liquid film: the standard version has U-grooves (bidirectional) that lift the faces apart, so there is no friction on the faces and no heat generated at the seal or in the medium. EagleBurgmann also lists the principle as self-closing at pressure reversal, so the seal does not open if the buffer gas pressure fails, and the seat rotates in the HR design.

The datasheet gives two main versions. The HRGS-DC fits dimensions according to DIN 24960 C or ANSI Big Bore, and the HRGS-DD corresponds to API 682 configuration 3NC-FB with API Plan 74 for larger shafts or higher pressure. Recommended applications are gases and liquids, media that require high purity and environmentally harmful media, in the chemical industry and refining technology.

What the gas barrier does and does not do

Property Datasheet statement
Contact-free operation Faces separated by gas film; no friction, no frictional heat in the product
Solids-containing media Suitable for media containing solids, because the product side faces do not rely on a liquid film
Buffer pressure failure Seal does not open on loss of buffer pressure; self-closing at pressure reversal
High purity and environment Recommended for media that require high purity and for environmentally harmful media

A gas-lubricated seal needs a gas supply at a pressure above the product pressure and a minimum differential pressure of 3 bar to keep the faces separated; the datasheet gives a maximum differential pressure of 16 bar for internal pressure. The datasheet gives a sliding velocity range of 4 to 25 m/s, so check the shaft speed against it.

Selection and installation notes

Choose the HRGS-D where a liquid-barrier dual seal is not acceptable, for example for high-purity products or where the barrier liquid would contaminate the process, and where a suitable buffer gas supply is available. Check the shaft speed against the 4 to 25 m/s range, the elastomer temperature limit and whether the pump flange dimensions follow DIN 24960 C or ANSI Big Bore. For shafts up to 200 mm or pressures up to 40 bar select the HRGS-DD. The datasheet states that its specifications are guide values and that the exact application conditions must be notified before a guarantee can be given.

For a liquid-barrier dual cartridge seal see the EagleBurgmann Cartex-DN in the pumps category, or the Flowserve ISC2 API 682 cartridge seal.

How the EagleBurgmann HRGS-D works

Two seal pairs run with a barrier gas between them instead of a liquid film. Grooves in the seal faces pump the gas in and lift the faces slightly apart. The faces then run without contact, so there is no friction and no heat at the seal.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the HRGS-D

Fit the cartridge on the shaft and tighten it to the seal chamber. Connect the buffer gas supply and set the gas pressure above the process pressure. Check the gas supply and the seal at regular intervals.
