Brand: AUMA
AUMA GHE 12.1 Part-Turn Worm Gearbox (1,000 Nm)
Description
Overview
For hand-operated quarter-turn valves in the heavy class, the AUMA GHE 12.1 is AUMA’s biggest manual worm gearbox. One thousand Newton-metres at the valve come from roughly forty at the handwheel, the shaft capacity reaches 50 mm, and the whole unit weighs 13 kg. Because it never needs a motor, it suits isolation valves that are turned a handful of times each year, and the self-locking gearing makes sure the disc stays where the operator left it.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA GHE 12.1 to valve manufacturers, contractors and plant owners across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. Our engineers check the valve flange, the shaft and the available manual force against AUMA’s data and supply the gearbox with manufacturer documentation.
Operating Principle of the AUMA GHE 12.1
A worm shaft, driven by the handwheel, meshes with a worm wheel on the output coupling of the AUMA GHE 12.1. The housing is spheroidal cast iron to GJS-500-7, with bronze alloy available for seawater duty, and the hardened steel coupling can likewise be ordered in bronze. A pointer follows the valve at all times, so the position is visible from the operating platform.
Eighty turns of reduction, a factor close to 25 and twenty handwheel revolutions per quarter turn define the feel of the gearbox. The stop positions are factory-set to 90 degrees within a fixed window of 82 to 98 degrees. AUMA rates the service life at 1,000 OPEN-STOP-CLOSE cycles over a swing of 90 degrees in the temperature band from -25 to +80 degrees Celsius.
Engineering Design of the AUMA GHE 12.1
The mounting face is an F12 flange cast into the housing in line with EN ISO 5211; for F14 an intermediate flange is added, which can call for a longer coupling. Machining of the coupling accepts 50 mm round shafts, 36 mm square ends or 41 mm two-flat ends, and the gearbox can be turned on the coupling in four 90-degree positions.
A polyamide handwheel is standard; ball-handle wheels and bronze operating elements per VG 85081 (version A, or version B with an extra ball element) are available. Sealing is IP67 with an IP68 upgrade; corrosion class KN applies, with KM for bronze parts in seawater.
Size Position of the AUMA GHE 12.1 Within the GHE Series
The AUMA GHE 12.1 tops the GHE series, as the AUMA data sheet figures below show.
| Type | Max. output torque | Input torque | Valve flange | Max. round / square / two-flat shaft | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GHE 10.1 | 500 Nm | approx. 20 Nm | F10 (F12 option) | 38 / 30 / 27 mm | 7.5 kg |
| GHE 12.1 | 1,000 Nm | approx. 40 Nm | F12 (F14 option) | 50 / 36 / 41 mm | 13 kg |
Both rows share the 80:1 ratio, the 20 input turns for 90 degrees and the 1,000-cycle service life.
Key Features
The AUMA GHE 12.1 gives heavy handwheel-operated quarter-turn valves a reliable self-locking drive:
- Up to 1,000 Nm at the valve from about 40 Nm at the handwheel.
- The 80:1 ratio keeps the factor near 25 and the input at 20 turns for a quarter turn.
- An F12 flange in the housing is joined by F14 through an intermediate flange.
- The coupling can be machined for 50 mm round, 36 mm square or 41 mm two-flat shafts.
- A self-locking worm drive holds the valve, and the pointer shows position continuously.
- A spheroidal cast iron body is offered with a bronze alloy option.
- At 13 kg without coupling and operating elements it is the heaviest of the four GHE sizes.
- IP67 is standard and IP68 optional, with 1,000 operating cycles documented.
Industrial Applications
Larger butterfly valves in water distribution, ball valves on fuel and utility headers and plug valves on low-frequency lines are where the AUMA GHE 12.1 earns its place. Pump stations, desalination post-treatment and district-cooling branches along the Omani coast use handwheel gearboxes of this kind, and the bronze variant is a natural fit for marine conditions.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the GHE 12.1 to contractors, valve builders and operators across Oman and the GCC, including customers in the Sohar and Salalah economic zones. With about 40 Nm needed at the handwheel for the full 1,000 Nm, check the hand force available at the valve and consider a larger handwheel or a motorised alternative for frequent duty.
Handwheel Effort and Operating Time with the AUMA GHE 12.1
Handwheel gearboxes are judged by the effort they demand from the operator. The AUMA GHE 12.1 turns a full 1,000 Nm valve load into about 40 Nm at the input shaft, and a simple lever calculation shows what that means on a 250 mm handwheel: 40 Nm divided by a 0.125 m radius is a rim force of roughly 320 N, which one person can sustain for a quarter turn. Twenty handwheel revolutions complete the 90-degree swing, so an operator turning at one revolution per second needs about twenty seconds, which is why the GHE 12.1 suits valves that are operated infrequently and without time pressure. Because the worm drive is self-locking, the handwheel can be released at any point of the stroke without the valve drifting, and the end positions are limited by the fixed 82 to 98 degree swing window of the gearbox.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.
AUMA actuator and gearbox types
SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.
Where AUMA electric actuators are used
AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.
Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need
For a replacement send photos of the actuator, motor and controls nameplates: type, order number, serial number and wiring diagram number. For a new actuator we need:
- valve type, required torque or thrust, and turns or stroke
- valve mounting flange and stem or shaft details
- output speed, duty (open-close or modulating)
- supply voltage and frequency, control signals or fieldbus
- enclosure protection, ambient temperature, Ex requirement
