Description
A flanged steel housing for large compressed air flows
The Donaldson SG 0108-3840 series is the flanged, welded-steel filter housing that Donaldson Filtration Deutschland offers for central compressed air stations. Thirteen sizes cover a nominal flow of 1,080 to 38,400 m3/h, which puts SG housings downstream of screw compressors, ahead of refrigeration dryers and after adsorption dryers where a threaded aluminium housing would be too small.
The housing is built as a pressure vessel to directive 2014/68/EU (or 2014/29/EU as printed in the data sheet) and is coated inside and out with polyester powder. Standard versions ship with an economizer differential pressure indicator and a float drain; the Superplus version adds an electronically level-controlled UFM-D condensate drain behind a ball valve.

The table picks nine of the thirteen sizes; the data sheet gives the remaining dimensions A to G and the lifting-eye and anchor-bolt positions for every size.
Choosing the element grade and the version
The housing only sets the flow range; filtration performance comes from the element. Data sheet values are initial differential pressure at 7 bar in dry condition: 0.03 bar for FF, 0.04 bar for MF and 0.05 bar for SMF coalescing grades, with residual oil content below 0.03, 0.02 and 0.01 mg/m3 respectively at 3 mg/m3 inlet. PE and SB particle grades are rated 100 percent at 25 micrometre, and the AK activated-carbon grade lists 0.003 mg/m3 residual oil when an MF or SMF filter sits upstream.
Sizes 1152 to 3840 are made with a bottom hinge, so the element can be changed without lifting the bowl, which saves headroom in a compressor room. Donaldson lists chemical, food and beverage, paint and lacquer, environmental and pharmaceutical industries for the family, and compressor pre-filtration for refrigeration or adsorption dryers as the standard duty.

Compressed air quality is set by ISO 8573-1 classes for particles, water and oil. A typical instrument air system uses a coarse filter and a fine coalescing filter before the dryer, an adsorption dryer for a low pressure dew point (for example -40 °C), and a dust filter after it. An activated carbon stage removes oil vapour where the air touches food or is breathed. Heatless dryers use some of the dry air to regenerate the desiccant, while heat-regenerated and zero-purge types save that air on larger systems.
