The PCV valve version used here is the compact size; PCA valves give higher flow capacity at 4.13 inches long, and PCP valves suit larger flows with 1/8 inch NPT ports. Alicat lists PCR (Rolamite) versions with 3/4 inch NPT ports for large flows, needing 24 Vdc at 1 A and upright mounting.

Tell the supplier the control direction (inlet or exhaust), the supply pressure and the fluid so the right valve is fitted.

The 100 PSIG range keeps the sensor burst rating at three times full scale and the common-mode limit at 200 PSIG for differential versions up to 100 PSID. In practice you set the setpoint over the serial or analog link, watch the actual pressure on the display or the bus, and let the valve do the work, with the autotune feature of the Alicat family helping to match the loop to your volume and tubing. A larger downstream volume slows the response, while a very small volume speeds it and may call for tuning. Record the tuned parameters with the commissioning sheet for later service.

Installation and operation notes

The Alicat PC manual shows the controller fitted downstream of a regulated supply, with a suggested filter of about 20 microns upstream to protect the valve seat. Orientation is unimportant for PC valves; PCR Rolamite valves must remain upright.

Provide a supply pressure above the setpoint plus the valve drop, and vent or exhaust arrangements where downward control is required.
