Description
The Swagelok SS-QC6-D-600 is a QC6 quick-connect stem with an internal valve, known in the catalog as a double-end shutoff (DESO) stem. When it is pulled from its body, the stem valve closes and keeps fluid in the line, so a hose or tube can be disconnected without a separate isolation valve and without draining the system. Its inlet is a 3/8 in. Swagelok tube-fitting end, and it is made in 316 stainless steel with FKM O-rings.

What the valve in the stem does
The catalog separates stems into single-end shutoff, without a valve, and double-end shutoff with a valve that closes the stem when uncoupled. The DESO stem here carries a spring-loaded valve and a red polyurethane-coated sleeve that identifies it as a shutoff stem. The body half has its own valve, so both sides shut when the connector is parted. Because of the trapped volume between valve and body, a small amount of fluid, the spillage, escapes when parting and a small amount of air enters when connecting: for QC6 the catalog gives 1.0 cm3 for each at 70 F.
SS-QC6-D-600 is therefore the choice for liquid lines or pressurised gas lines that must stay closed, such as sample lines to portable cylinders or hoses to a calibrator.
Ratings and flow
QC6 in 316 stainless steel with FKM O-rings is rated 1500 psig (103 bar) when coupled at room temperature, reducing to 1150 psig at 200 F and 400 psig at 400 F; for connectors uncoupled, and while coupling and uncoupling, the limit is 250 psig (17.2 bar). A DESO stem has a Cv of 0.5 with a standard or reverse-flow body, half that of the open SESO stem SS-QC6-S-600 at 1.0, because of the valve. QC6 SESO and full-flow bodies pass up to 6 US gal/min (22 L/min) of water at 70 F.
The catalog gives overall length A for the 3/8 in. DESO stem of 2.64 in. (67.1 mm) with nuts finger-tight, and a 3/4 in. hex flat.

SS-QC6-D-600: stainless steel, QC6 series, D for double-end shutoff stem, 600 for 3/8 in. tube-fitting end. Replace D by S for a stem without a valve (SS-QC6-S-600), or add a material or O-ring designator such as EP, KR or KZ. Any QC6 body will mate, including standard, reverse-flow and full-flow forms.
Use filters ahead of quick-connects, protect uncoupled halves with dust caps, avoid rotating while coupled and support hanging hoses to prevent side load. Pressure restrictions apply while coupling and uncoupling, so depressurise or stay within 250 psig.

Swagelok is the American maker of tube fittings and small-bore valves, best known for its two-ferrule compression tube fitting. Fred A. Lennon and Cullen B. Crawford founded it in Cleveland, Ohio, in July 1947 as Crawford Fitting Company to make that fitting. Lennon bought the whole business and the patent in 1948, and the company has been based in Solon, Ohio, since the mid-1960s.

A Swagelok part number can be read directly. In SS-810-6, "SS" is 316 stainless steel, "810" means a 1/2 in. tube fitting (8 sixteenths of an inch, 10 series), and "-6" is a union. A suffix such as "-8" adds a 1/2 in. NPT end, and "M0" marks metric tube, as in SS-12M0-6 for 12 mm. Tube fittings must be made up the same way every time: finger-tight, then 1 1/4 turns for most sizes. A gap inspection gauge confirms the fitting has been pulled up.
